AFTER LUNCH, TIMM headed to the Legion for his book launch.

The publisher had provided him with a hundred books to autograph and sell. Personally, he thought that was optimistic. He’d be lucky if he sold a dozen.

The hall was packed when he arrived, the townspeople lined up out the door. As he squeezed by, they clapped him on the back and congratulated him.

“Great to have a published author in our town.”

“We’re proud of you, Timm.”

“Yep. You’ve done the whole town proud.”

Something shifted in Timm’s chest, became fluid. They all wanted his book? They were all proud of him? Why?

Hank Shelter steered him toward the table with the towering stack of books at the front of the room. “Sit down, Timm. Everyone wants to buy one and they won’t take them without your John Henry inside.”

Timm smiled. He’d done it. He’d restored the Francks’ position, had brought honor back to their name. Ma would be so pleased. A sense of satisfaction warmed him from head to toe. The Francks were a force to be reckoned with again in Ordinary.

Timm hated to assume, but he thought he might have the job of mayor in the bag. He might have already won the election.

For the next hour, Timm talked to his neighbors and signed books. His wrist started to cramp, but he never stopped smiling.

At one point, he looked up to speak with the next person and there stood Angel.

So. She’d made it home safely the past two nights—with Chester’s escort, he hoped, rather than taking her chances on her own.

The bruising on her face had started to fade and assume the ugly shades of green that signified healing. She had a small scab on her lip.

Timm opened the front cover to the title page of the next copy in the dwindling pile and…stopped.

He didn’t know what to write.

He’d signed eighty or so books without hesitation and, yet—

What should he say to Angel?

For a tough girl, she looked unaccountably shy.

He knew he was a good writer. He’d been published, hadn’t he? But he was drawing a blank.

What to say to Angel?

Somewhere in the maelstrom of competing reactions he always felt toward her, there was a thought that he could write, but what was it?

Somehow, a dry, reasonable remark seemed inadequate. He didn’t want to lay his soul bare, either, when he wouldn’t have anything to do with her in the future. She was definitely not his type.

Besides, she’d rejected him.

But then, why did she watch him so tentatively? As if she, too, wondered what he would say?

He’d made a date with Becca Hardy this morning and he planned to actively pursue a relationship with her.

Mind made up, he scribbled, All the best. Timm, then handed her the book.

She turned the book around to read it and a split second of disappointment flashed across her face, followed by her sardonic grin, as though she knew she’d come up short in his regard, that she wasn’t worth any more to him than a generic sentiment.
