My heart thundered, panic raced. A Hexer…here? Not just any Hexer…Wilds.

“Come.” Lord Pilton turned away from the Hexer and strode past me through the open cell door.

Wilds’ eyes widened, a tiny shake of his head. I waited for the whisper of my name…for the sound that haunted my dreams. Instead, he said nothing, just watched as I turned and followed the master of the house.

Something tugged in the middle of my chest, some kind of wanting. My steps stilled at the door into the house.

“Healer?”

I lifted my gaze and forced a smile. I had a sick boy to tend to…and a stone to find. I didn’t have time for him, for the man whose lips I’d kissed a thousand times in my mind. I followed, making my way back through the house, and climbed the stairs all the way to the top, before I slipped inside the boy’s room once more.

My pulse raced, booming in my ears as I pressed my spine against the door and tried to breathe. That look…that untameable desire.

“No,” I whispered. “This cannot happen.”

I shoved forward, finding the seat beside the boy once more. He looked better, the blush still raging in his little body. A sheen of sweat had broken across his brow. I looked at the small table beside him, and the cloth in the bowl of water.

He was holding on, fighting. I’d used all the power I dared to, given him as much as I thought he could handle, any more heat in his body would send him spiraling.

I wrung the cloth and pressed it against his forehead, then gripped his hand. But no matter how hard I tried, my thoughts returned to the Hexer downstairs.

They’d hurt him…tortured him, probably. Where were the others? Were they dead? I inhaled hard at the thought. I dragged my attention back to the boy, and the tremor beneath his skin. “Rest now, and grow stronger.”

I released a little more power, letting the heat find the disease in his blood. Seconds turned to minutes, until I trembled with the strain of keeping my power at bay. I lifted my head an hour later, my breaths deep and heavy, muscles tight across my shoulders. But he was better. His skin was pinker, a twitch in his face where there’d been none before.

I whispered a prayer to the Goddess to protect him and rose quietly, going to the door. Whispered words left my lips in a spell of slumber. A heavy thud came from outside the door as I gripped the handle and pulled the door open.

Heavy snores echoed from the hallway and from other parts of the house. My magic was limited to the elements, but still I had a few tiny tricks up my sleeve. I slipped out of the room and closed the door behind me.

A grunt was followed by a murmur from the guard slumped against the wall, his head craned to the side, lips parted. I stepped over his splayed legs and made for the stairs.
