Some time later, Caleb woke with Brance's arms around him and an urgent pressure in his bladder. He hated to leave the warmth and comfort of the bed they shared, and the thought of going out in the cold was anathema to him—over the low guttering of the flames in the hearth, he could hear the wind howl around the eaves of their cabin with a banshee's cry. In another hour or two when night fell and he changed, the cabin would be too hot for him; he'd revel in the wintry wind. But here, now? He snuggled closer to his sleeping lover and tried to ignore nature's call.

It was no use. The more he tried not to think about it, the more pressing his need became. Finally he slipped from the covers, tugged his union suit off the makeshift clothesline, and pulled it on. As he buttoned up the front flap, he ducked under the shirts on the line to find his boots drying by the hearth. He stepped into them, stomping to make sure they were secure, then grabbed Brance's duster jacket off the line for added protection from the weather. He slipped into it as he headed for the back door and the promise of the outhouse beyond.

The sun hung low in the sky, casting long, blue shadows across the length of snow-covered ground between the cabin and the outhouse. The stretch of snow between the two buildings seemed to span a mile or more, though Caleb knew it was only a quick trot away. Still, the snow was deep and unbroken; he'd be up to his knees in it for most of the trip. At least the wind would be at his back, and there was the promise of cuddling up to his lover again in the warmth of their bed when he returned. With a longing look over his shoulder at Brance, still asleep in the glow of the firelight, Caleb turned up the collar of his jacket and, closing the door behind him, stepped off the porch into the snow.

Almost instantly, the chill seeped through the thin material of his union suit, freezing his lower legs. He tried to walk fast, but twice stepped out of his boots. When he stuck his foot back into the drift, he knocked snow into the boot and shivered as it melted beneath his foot. The wind was strong as it tore around the sides of the cabin, the thin duster little protection. Snow swirled around him as he walked, but 56

whether it was fresh or just blown up from what already covered the ground, Caleb didn't know.

The outhouse was in a small copse of tall pine trees that buffeted it from the weather. Caleb ducked inside almost gratefully. With the door shut, the air was cold but still, with a faintly rancid odor that made him remember the small bag of lime Brance had picked up at the general store in town.
