Months passed, and I was sinking into a clinical depression. Josh begged me to have a check-up. He told me he was worried that my cancer had returned. When I looked at my pale, thin body in the mirror, I understood his concern. The kids fought more than usual. They probably felt that something was amiss, but didn’t know what it was.
I avoided Adina physically and would have gladly done so emotionally too, except my heart and mind wouldn’t relent. I thought about her, dreamt about her, and on the rare occasions Josh and I made love, it was Adina sucking my clit, Adina fucking my pussy until I came long and hard. I fantasized about Josh getting breast implants and having a pussy with slick folds. I longed for the sweet scent of Adina’s sex and craved her like the most potent drug on the planet.
I was sure to die from this unsatisfied desire. But I persevered and called on every ounce of strength I could muster to get through each day. I told myself I had to—for my family’s sake.
I signed up for adult education classes to try to take my mind off Adina and how desperately I missed her kisses. I preferred to suffer in silence around others, but bellowed heart-wrenching sobs whenever I was alone. My torture became increasingly unbearable because I missed my friend even more than I missed the sex.
I started to ring her on countless occasions, but hung up before hearing her voice. I missed her voice. I missed her decadent outfits, fire-engine red nails, pin-straight blonde hair and her lips. Oh God! I missed her lips. I needed her kiss.
Now or never. I hit the redial key. My heart pounded out of my chest as one ring became two, then three, and then when I was sure the answering machine was about to pick up, she said hello. She sounded as if she’d been crying. I started to cry. Sobs. We cried in stereo.
“I’m so sorry,” I said, between sucking in air that seemed in such limited supply.
“I miss you, Barbie.”
Her crying intensified the pain in my chest. “I’m coming over.”
“Please, hurry.”
She opened her door before I rang the bell. Even with puffy, red-rimmed eyes and a bright red nose, she was a sight for my sore eyes. I flew into her arms and we held each other until our last tear was shed.
She spoke first, her voice cracking like the breaking of my heart. “I know how hard this is for both of us.”
I tried to interrupt.
“Shhhh, please let me say this.” She placed her finger over my lips. I kissed the tip, but didn’t say a word. She took a deep breath before she continued and nodded for me to do the same. I did.
“I know we’re married with children, and I know you love Josh, or did love him, and our children come first, but Barbie, darling, we need each other. I can’t go another day without you. Maybe
