Chapter Nineteen

Ready to Go Home.

KNOCK-KNOCK. Dr. Plunkett popped her head into the hospital room doorway. “Louise, your vitals are normal. How do you feel?”

“Aside from a mild headache, I’m feeling pretty good.”

“You’re only experiencing mild pain right now because of the drugs. When those wear off, you’ll feel the bruises all over your body. You’re a lucky woman to have survived that accident.”

“I just saw the photo of what was left of my SUV.”

“And just as lucky to walk away with so few scrapes and bruises.” The doctor shook her head. “Louise Tumble, it just wasn’t your time, if you know what I mean.”

Of course, Louise understood the doctor’s meaning. It wasn’t her time to die. Still, she was curious. “What the hell happened to me? I remember feeling really hot and not being able to catch my breath.” She patted her chest. “You said I didn’t have a stroke. Did I have a heart attack?”

“There was no indication of a heart attack in your blood work.”

“Not a stroke and not a heart attack. That’s a relief.” Louise wrinkled her face and eyed the doctor. “But something happened to me. Something caused me to black out.”

“I believe you had a severe panic attack which caused you to faint.”

“I was in severe panic mode. I thought someone had just killed…” Her voice faded to silence as she relived the dreadful call.

Dr. Plunkett tapped Louise’s arm, bringing her back to the present. “Have you experienced anything like this before?”

Louise shook her head. “And God willing, I never will again.”

“One of the common signs of the onset of a panic attack is hyperventilating.” Plunkett sucked short, fast breaths as a demonstration. “In the future, if you find yourself gasping in short breaths, slow your breathing. Take long, deep breaths.” She inhaled and exhaled, as an example of how to breathe. “I’ll have the nurse give you a pamphlet with resource numbers.”

“Thank you. When can I go home?”

“As soon as you feel up to it.”

“I’m ready to go now.”

Dr. Plunkett turned her attention to Jason. “I hope you plan to drive.”

“Absolutely.”

“Good. I’ll have the nurse remove the IV and monitoring equipment and bring your walking papers.”

Louise thanked Dr. Plunkett and watched her slip into the hallway. She turned to Jason. “What time is it?”

He glanced at his wristwatch. “Almost four.”

She plucked at the hospital gown. “Where are my clothes?”

“The paramedics cut off your shirt and bra.”

“Oh.” She crossed her arms, flattening her palms over her breasts.

“I gathered a few things from your closet when I was bringing Milt and Jen up to speed on taking care of Ben, Charlie, and Callie. And before you ask, Milt is well and Jen said he’s actually taking it easy.”

Warmth cascaded over her. Jason was a good man, and she was grateful he was in her life. “Thank you, Jason. Thank you so much.”

But the comfort of her husband-to-be at her side couldn’t change reality. The weight of the world—at least her world—came crashing down around her. Tom’s killer still lurked in Tumble Lake.
