David had a headache. Too much booze with Chloe last night. It had been lovely to see her, but the whiskey was taking its toll today and he was glad he was finally home.
He sat in his car in the driveway and looked at the house in front of him. Bricks, cement, tiles. It was just a pile of building materials artfully arranged into a shape, but it held in its belly so much more than that. Hopes, dreams, expectation, disappointment, sadness.
Anna had loved this house. She said it reminded her of her childhood home and he could see why. Except Anna had wanted her version to be full of life and vibrancy, unlike the magnolia shell that her own mother had created. Anna’s mother had died a few years back, but the few times David had met her, she had never been a lively woman. Rather, she had come across as an empty vessel – pretty to look at but with little substance. Anna had done her best to be the opposite – full of fire and brimstone, never sitting still, keeping him on his toes.
David hadn’t particularly liked this house. He preferred something with character. Nooks and crannies; alcoves and cornices. This was all sharp corners and rectangular rooms. No curves or bends.
Funny, he used to like his women like that too – until he met Anna, who was the epitome of straight lines and pointy edges.
Now when he looked at his house, he still saw Anna everywhere. From the miniature bay trees standing guard at the front door to the midnight blue painted front door. That paint had taken weeks to choose, with Anna agonising over paint samples like the fate of the world was at stake if she chose the wrong hue.
He should just sell this place. Get something more suited to him. The kids would be okay with it, as long as they were close enough to keep going to the same school. Definitely something to think about, especially since he felt his chest constrict every time he walked through the front door, as though he expected her to be standing there, all of it a sick joke, before she started telling him off for leaving his ties dangling over the banister or for not opening his pile of post before it toppled over under its own weight.
He sighed and lowered his chin to his chest.
He could just drive away now. Vicky was with the kids. They’d be okay. He could start the engine and drive somewhere, anywhere, just away from here.
Anna would tell him he was being a coward.
And she would be right.
Instead, he climbed out of the car with flat feet and a thumping head, grabbed his bag from the back seat and approached the front door of his wife’s house.
He pushed it open and felt the blood drain from his face.
Standing with her back to him was Anna.
Her dark hair fell iron-straight to her shoulders. She was wearing one of her favourite lilac sundresses and her feet were bare, with licks of lilac polish on her toenails.
