“I’ll check with Jake, but I reckon you’ll be sweet to move in whenever,” Aubrey’s voice reaches my ears, pulling my attention from my conversation with Annabelle and I look between her and Frankie.

“Awesome. Appreciate it, Aubrey.”

“What?” My voice comes out more troubled than I meant it to and Frankie’s eyes scan mine quickly, working to decipher my tone.

“Babe, I told you I was looking for somewhere to live. Aubrey said Jake’ll sublet me the apartment next to theirs until the guy who lives there gets home.”

I look to Aubrey, feeling somewhat betrayed by her helping Frankie move out so quickly. She glances at Annabelle, wide-eyed, then back at Frankie expectantly, wanting her to alleviate my sudden change in mood.

“I just didn’t expect it to be so… sudden. You only just mentioned you were looking and now you’ll be leaving me.”

“Not leaving you, Darci. I can’t keep crashing in your spare room.”

“Yes, you can,” I declare louder than I intended, making me swallow down my embarrassment deeply, my cheeks shading as I fiddle with my glasses.

“Darc, babe, I need to start living my own life. As an adult. Not relying on others. I’m moving into a solid place, emotionally and having my own space will be good for me.”

I nod. “Just like having you here, is all. I get it. I’m blaming all current and future outbursts on these hideous hormones,” I groan. “Sorry.”

“Luca’s place?” Annabelle questions beside me, and I look to Aubrey, waiting for her to answer.

She chews her food, her hand held up to cover her mouth as she finishes her mouthful. Finally swallowing, she nods. “Yeah. I don’t know the story but he’s back in Arizona for some family stuff, indefinitely, says he’s coming back, but Jake has no idea when. His apartment is just sitting there, so if it helps Frank out while she looks for something more permanent, why not?” She shrugs, popping another egg roll into her mouth.

“Ohhh… when you move in, have us over. I’d love to snoop through his apartment.”

I laugh at Annabelle, shaking my head but she lifts her shoulders on a furrow of her brow. “What? The guy’s delicious. I kinda wanna know his secrets.”

Her eyes dart to Frankie, her voice turning serious. “Don’t tell Archer I said that.”

“The delicious comment or you wanting to snoop?”

She thinks about it for a second. “Both.”

A bark of laughter coughs from Aubrey’s throat, but she shakes her head. “He is delicious. And scary. He’s so, I don’t know… domineering and… perceptive. It’s off-putting.”

“Hot. Demanding. Observant. Seems like all the right potential of someone I’d easily drop my panties for.”

Aubrey’s loud clap echoes in my apartment, paralleled by mine and Annabelle’s amused laughter.

“Totally,” Annabelle agrees, smiling wide.

Frankie, pleased her comment was gifted the response she wanted, grins, watching the three of us in enjoyment. “Speaking of dropping panties, seen much of Bennett lately?”

Our trio of laughter dies off immediately, Annabelle and Aubrey instantly focusing all their attention on me.

“No,” I grumble, dropping back into my armchair on a huff.
