XVI. Pegasus

“What?” Eddie’s voice was but a whisper; the word was not said to be heard.

“I can’t—”

“I knew I shouldn’t have called you.” A flush of heat, thoughts he couldn’t sort, shared smiles that suddenly made no sense, all began to race under Eddie’s skin. “I should have pushed Lisbon to reset their chain. I should—”

“Eddie.” Sid reached out for him, but Eddie scrubbed his hand through his hair. His eyes focused on the floor as he cracked his knuckles—pop, pop, pop—with each misinterpreted moment. The strudel was just a simple kindness; today’s help was the same. “Eddie, look at me.”

“I’m so sorry. I thought after the parade… after the fire, the other night, you were—I thought—”

“I’m still here.”

Eddie gasped. Sid stood right in front of him, holding Eddie’s other hand. “You’re still here.”

“I’m still here. And I can’t keep doing this. I can’t keep saying ‘I’m still here,’ and walk away from you like it’s what I want, when it’s not, like I’m happier away from you than I am when I’m with you.”

“Oh,” was all Eddie could summon. He wished for a pun at the ready. He couldn’t think of one word to say, let alone a string of them that played on each other.

“I want more underwear parties and peach… everything. I want more rainbow lollipops and kisses at parades. Slow…” Sid’s gaze moved from Eddie’s eyes to his mouth. “Slow mornings and long showers.”

Eddie grinned. His heart raced. “We might have some interruptions with those slow mornings and long showers.”

“Well.” Sid chuckled and brought Eddie’s hand to his lips for a tender kiss. “Yes. We’ll adapt. That is—” Sid took another step closer. “If I didn’t wait too long and lose my chance.”

“Sid?”

“Yes?”

“I know I’m repeating myself, but—” Eddie brushed his knuckles over the curve of Sid’s jaw, and a day’s stubble scratched under his fingers. “This is where I want to kiss you.”

Sid’s eyes closed at Eddie’s touch; a smile curled his lips and creased the corners of his eyes. “This is where I say yes.”

Like the night of their first kiss, time disappeared when Eddie kissed Sid. His lips shifted on Sid’s, from tender to insistent, from soothing to needy. His fingers slipped into Sid’s hair and tugged as he mouthed his way down Sid’s jaw and neck.

Sid was breathless but for a laugh that bubbled out when they bumped into Eddie’s recliner. “We are,” Sid said as Eddie chased him with his mouth, “the worst at this goodnight business.”

Eddie stopped. His mouth hovered over Sid’s pulse point. “I think we’re pretty fucking good at it.” He kissed up the length of Sid’s neck. His hand was warm on Sid’s skin; his lips were wet and soft in a slow kiss. “Upstairs?”

“Yes.”

Eddie led the way; the creak of the old house’s steps echoed in the stairwell. They stopped at Adrian’s door, and Eddie slowly turned the copper knob. “Give me a minute?”

Adrian’s door opened with a quiet pop; a corner nightlight bathed the room in a soft blue hue.
