Chapter 20

Calvin:

I wake minutes before my first cell phone alarm is scheduled to ring. Gently, I roll towards the edge of the bed to turn off both alarms. I sit up, glancing at Schuyler sleeping soundly on her side. I guess yesterday wasn’t a dream after all; what an emotional roller coaster ride it turned out to be. This beautiful, amazing woman revealed her biggest fears to me after she tried to end our relationship.

Fate is a fickle bitch for stealing motherhood from someone so caring. Yet, those that can’t care for or don’t want a baby, continue to conceive. My heart breaks for her. I wish there was some way I could erase her pain.

I tiptoe past Tyler’s bedroom door, noting he’s still sleeping soundly. Sitting on the sofa, wrapped in a throw blanket, I try to make sense of everything. She came home with me without a fight, she asked me to hold her until she fell asleep, but I don’t know if we are still a couple or not. I plan to remain by her side, making it difficult for her to toss me away. I’m not giving her up without a fight.

I smile at the sight of Tyler walking towards me, rubbing his sleepy eyes while sporting a raging case of bed head. Without a word, he settles into my lap, wrapping his little arms around my neck.

“I love you,” I whisper, holding him tight against my chest.

“Did Miss Sky go home?” he asks, pulling away to look me in the eyes.

“She slept in my room,” I state. “Should we make her breakfast?”

Tyler nods, a little smile on his innocent face. “Bacon. I want to make her bacon.”

“Okay,” I agree, placing him on the floor and walking into the kitchen.

We make quick work of washing our hands, pulling out all the ingredients, and setting the table for the three of us. I flip pancakes while Tyler stands on a chair next to me.

“Hey!” Schuyler calls softly to get our attention, having entered the room behind us.

“Miss Sky, you’re awake!” Tyler cheers, climbing down from the chair and running to her. “We’re making you bacon.” His little voice sounds as joyful now as it does on Christmas morning.

“Yum, yum.” Schuyler smiles at me before moving to sit in a chair at the table, Tyler glued to her side.

My belly warms at the sight of the two of them. Schuyler, in our house, in my bed... It feels right. We aren’t on solid ground yet, but we will be. I plan to remain at her side as she works through her pain. I’m not sure how to help her; I think the smile on her face when she’s with Tyler tells me this is a good start.
