Lord, You just gotta help me. I can’t lose another son!” Mom declared after York stormed out the door.

I had been reading many books at school to keep up with the quota that Miss Bennett gave us. None of the drama in any of them related to all of the real-life problems that I had to face. My mom was living with three teenagers. Each of us was strong-willed and had our own opinions. But she was still the mother and my two brothers seemed to forget that crucial point.

Yancy didn’t even appear to be phased that York had left. But mom headed off down the street after him. For some reason, I just believed my brother would finally get some sense, turn around, and come back. But when that didn’t happen, I jogged behind my mother.

“You’re not gonna be able to catch him. He’s probably going to hang with Bone,” I said to her.

“Bone?” she said disapprovingly. “That little toothpick thug who dropped out of school and has been causin’ all kinds of trouble? I know your brother is not out here hanging out with him!”

“Ma, it’s such a long story,” I said.

She slowed down and touched my arm. “I hurt York and I know he’s upset with me, Yasmin. You guys have to come to me when you have problems. You have to talk to me. You need to let me in on why you feel your world is so difficult.”

“But, Ma, you got your own stuff that weighs you down and now you got this new job. Finally, you’re smiling. No one wants to upset you again. So we just go about our way, doing our thing, hoping to please you. I just think … nothing, forget it. Go get York, please.”

“Girl, talk to me. Tell me what you need to say.”

I mumbled, “I think we need more guidance.”

“Well, that’s what I’m tryin’ to tell you. I wanna be there for you guys, but I can’t if you don’t open up to me.”

Myrek and his dad pulled up beside us.

“Yvette, I’ll pick you up in—is everything okay?” Mr. Mike asked.

“No, it’s not. I can’t make it for dinner, Mike. Something came up. Listen, right now I really need a ride, I’m too nervous to drive my car. Yasmin and I are trying to catch up with York,” she said, pointing in the direction we thought York went.

“What’s going on?” he asked.

“I don’t feel like explaining right now. I just need to catch my son. I gotta save my family. I’m doing the best I can with these kids—tryin’ to be mom and dad.”

He said, “All right, all right, hop in. Come on, let’s go and get him.”

Mr. Mike said, “I know it’s tough, Yvette. Especially with that hard-headed York, who thinks he knows every—”

“I don’t want to hear that about my son right now. I know he’s strong-willed and hanging with the wrong crowd, but he’s still my son and I just can’t lose him. I just can’t, Mike.
