Problems

“There’s a problem.” I would never want to start by saying those words; that starts the conversation down a very different path than saying, “We have a situation” or “Someone is uncomfortable with….” Situations are neutral. In the end, whoever is paying for the movie should be comfortable with the decision made. As long as you’ve explained the situation and offered options, you have to be OK with whatever is decided. The relationships with the client and actor are more important than any one shot.

If you think you may have been in the shot, whether physically or a with a pole shadow: if you can recreate the position of yourself and the mic, show the operator immediately. And tell him at what point you think you got in the shot. If the company is moving, tell the 1st AD so they can halt the work and either check the playback or just do another take for safety; it’s their call. If an actor changed their delivery or action, respectfully ask if the actor will be doing it the same way again, and then be prepared for the change. If the company wants to know why, don’t say it was because of the actor; just say there was a change. Don’t throw anyone under the bus. Everyone is human; things happen. Don’t play the blame game.

The Fisher Boom

The Fisher boom is making a comeback in Hollywood because of the use of multiple cameras as well as Covid-19 proximity concerns. It’s a great solution to being able to boom some otherwise impractical setups and is a good skill to practice during your down time. It’s possible to book time with J. L. Fisher directly.

Their website lists the various boom models, showing the differences. A Model 2 base works fine for most on-location situations. You’ll need to order the size base and the length of the boom that you anticipate needing—a 16'–18' is a safe bet—and the length of time you’ll need it. (Don’t forget to ask Production, in advance of your order, if they’ll need a purchase order number attached to the rental.) SAFET Y TIP: Always set the brake and make sure the wheels are extended before getting onto the platform.

Coordinate with Transpo for the pickup and delivery, as well as the location where you’ll want it dropped off. It comes disassembled, so you’ll need two people to at least set the boom height and lift the arm onto the base. Instructions for wiring and using the weights will be available at Fisher. Wear gloves when handling the weights, which are lead.
