Chapter Five
James dreamed of the past—no small wonder. In his nightmares, he never stopped running. How appropriate he relived the miserable film reel of his life in his dreams. The moment James turned eighteen, he left his abusive home and joined a bunch of thugs. After learning what he could, he plied his trade elsewhere. Life became one hell of a ride, defined by risk and reward until he fell in love with his mark.
Sunlight on his face tore James from the realm of sleep. Putting one arm up to shield his face, James forced his eyes open. Not recognizing his surroundings, he jolted up awake. Pain streaked up his leg, but it didn’t hurt as much as he thought. An unfamiliar living room stared back at him, with couches and carpets.
“Am I dreaming?” James muttered, rubbing his eyes. He lay on a couch, complete with thick blankets. A first-aid kit lay on the coffee table in front of him.
“You’re finally awake. Thank God, I thought you never would,” a familiar voice said.
Blinking, James saw Ezra walking up to him, checking his forehead then his pulse.
“Where am I? Where’s Mercy?” he asked.
“In my apartment, now put your leg up on the table,” Ezra said in a no-nonsense voice. James obeyed, noticing the fresh bandage on his calf. “Mercy asked if he could move you here, I agreed.”
“You took care of me all this time?” James asked, not hiding his surprise. Most folks in the Post-Fall world didn’t do anything free in his experience. “Why?”
“Because Mercy’s my friend,” Ezra said simply. “And it’s easier for me to keep an eye on you here than the clubhouse. Hellhounds are distrustful of outsiders in general. If Mercy claimed you as his mate, it would be a different matter.”
“He doesn’t want to see my face, huh?” James asked bitterly. Christ, Mercy saw him crawling on the floor, begging for the stupid drive like it made all the difference in the world. It did. God knew James wanted that ticket to Safe Haven badly, to start over where no one knew him. Why did it no longer seem as important now?
“Mercy’s one of the better Hellhounds you know,” Ezra muttered. He peeled off the bandages, and James saw the wound healing cleanly. Hell, how long had he been asleep? Days, it seemed. Fuck, James needed to get word to his contact. His delivery date had passed.
“He’s a decent guy,” Ezra pointed out.
“Decent?” James couldn’t help himself. He laughed. “You call that decent? Honey, we have different definitions then.”
Ezra’s ringing slap shocked him. “You have no idea, James.”
James rubbed his cheek, annoyed. “You know nothing about me.”
“I know enough. You’d willingly betray Mercy again to cash in your reward,” Ezra said simply.
Why bothering defending himself? James kept his mouth shut, watching Ezra work. No use now, he supposed. In a way, James was relieved Mercy took the drive because it made things simple. Failed job, so what else he could do?
James couldn’t take on an entire group of vicious bikers on his own.
