The cold thing Yahobi’s man put on my wrist was a manacle made of gold. The other end of the chain was locked around the bedpost. I thought it was a joke. When I figured out it wasn’t, I fought like a wild cat.

I called for Peter even though he was gone. I swore a blue streak. I threatened. Yahobi was not put off. He watched it all without expression.

Underneath his silken robe he became horribly aroused. This old, disgusting stud could have had any woman for the asking but Yahobi, it seemed, found sport in the taking. My helplessness, my beauty, the fact that, for most men, I was unattainable made me attractive but what made me irresistible was my fear.

The big man stepped back.

Yahobi opened his robe.

I screamed. He hit me in the stomach so my face wouldn’t be marred. Still, I fought. Silently, breathlessly. I fought then like I fight now. The two incidents are one and, as I drown, I hear the rattle of that gold chain. I hear the bedpost crack because I pulled so hard. I heard another crack that day and it didn’t sound like wood. Before I could look, Ubert Yahobi hit me again.

Then Ubert Yahobi raped me.
