Chapter Fourteen
The patrol car sat at the intersection of Beverly Drive near Highland. They had circled the block three times looking for Kelso and the bees. âKelso? Are you there? Kelso?â The line was dead.
Duke called the number again, but it went straight to voicemail. He was sure he heard the sound of a gunshot before the line went dead. He turned to the patrolman at the wheel of the car. âLetâs go down to Orange and Fourth Street! Code nine.â The driver gunned the engine and spun the wheel to turn them south. The car peeled out down Highland Avenue.

Kelso lay on the ground beneath the rose bushes. He inhaled hints of honey, plum and citrus. Could all of these bee boxes be to pollinate the rose bushes in the garden? He pondered this question but quickly realized that there were far, far too many hives for a relatively small rose garden. There was definitely something untoward happening. He noticed some blood on the ground next to him and felt the right side of his head. Blood oozed from his earlobe. The bullet had grazed him.
He looked to see where the shot had come from and got a glimpse of Albert Fossil holding a rifle. Kelso had obviously caught this person off guard. After all, he was an intruder. He pondered whether to give himself up and show his law enforcement credentials but decided against it. Fossil climbed the wall and stood on top to get a view of the rose garden near the tennis court. He peered around the yard in vain, unable to make out the location of his intruder.
The rose bushes were planted with companion plants in between. They offered generous cover for anyone seeking to hide. There were Lavandula plants, Russian sage and pink spikes of Veronica Picasso flowers, known for attracting hummingbirds. Fossil sat down on the wall. Kelso surmised he was trying to come up with some kind of plan to flush his intruder out. His answer came as Fossil headed over to the yard shed where the sprinkler valves were located. He turned them all on.
Kelso lay down beneath the lavender flowers. It was obvious that his assailant did not want to fire his weapon multiple times â if that were the case, wouldnât he have littered the flower garden with bullets to suss him out? This guy obviously did not want to alarm the neighbors. Had he called the police? This was doubtful, given that he would have to explain the elaborate bee farm in his backyard. The shooter was waiting until Kelso popped his head out of the foliage again. He obviously wanted to get off one clean shot and take him out. He would be okay if he stayed here as long as possible. Surely Duke was on his way. Or maybe not. Kelso was not sure where in their conversation the phone had dropped out. Then he noticed the sprinklers for the lawn near the tennis court were on full blast.
