Chapter 9

Jordan scrambled to make sense of all the information flooding his mind. Everything tried to come back to him in an instant, which was overwhelming. Sorting out what was important from what could wait was a daunting task. After cleaning himself up, and feeling a deep shame for taking Cade’s virginity and then giving him back a beast, Jordan was further horrified to discover he’d single handedly obliterated the human being known as Cade.

“But I believe he’s still in there, and I’m going to get him back.”

Now the black room and what he clearly did in there made a perfect, if not despicable, kind of sense. He took pleasure in pain and humiliation because it was the only way he could have release without falling in love. Even the barest spark that he’d had tonight had been enough to unleash his beast upon Cade.

Jordan knew how cunning and cruel the gods could be. It was why he’d been so careful to avoid anyone he thought he could love. If not for his accident, he would still be safe in his tower. Up there, separated from humanity, he’d been able to insulate himself. No wonder there wasn’t anything that had told him who he was. He’d tried to obliterate himself.

Decade after decade washed over him without any kindness, compassion, or joy. To love was to kill, and that was the most vicious twist the gods could inflict. Jordan even remembered being cast out because he’d wanted to give the humans the simplest tool—the wheel. With that they wouldn’t be so burdened. But the other gods didn’t see his generosity that way. Giving humanity anything was against the unwritten code. That was when Jordan realized the other gods enjoyed humanity’s struggle. They reveled in their failures and gnashed their teeth at their successes. With other gods willingly giving them knowledge, they were taking all the fun out of watching the humans stumble along. And so Jordan and a dozen others were cast out of heaven and now walked the Earth with a punishment so vile they dare not interact with any human for any length of time.

“All these millennia I kept that beast inside myself. And he’s coming back.”

The thought of that thing filling up Cade, stripping him of his humanity, and making a mockery of his sweet soul twisted Jordan’s emotions. How he hated the gods in that moment. They had indeed found a most vile way to punish their wayward citizens. And then, the answer came to him. There was a way to extract the beast from Cade and return it to the cage inside Jordan’s soul.

He had to kill Cade.

Jordan gripped the edge of the bathroom vanity and almost cracked the plastic that formed the sink. In order to save Cade’s soul from eternal torment inside the beast, he had to end his life. It was the only way.

Lifting his head, Jordan peered at himself in the mirror. Always, he looked the same. Nothing ever altered his features. Not time, not torment, not even terror.
