This exercise aims to demystify text, and to turn the abstract into something more concrete; to lift it out of the intellect so that the speech becomes something far more tangible and visceral for you to play with. You can apply it to any bit of text that is complex and tricky to get inside of. It will be a useful exercise to return to when you do Shakespeare.

This is not a free-association exercise in which a word will trigger all sorts of apparently unrelated images from your own life. Draw only what is mentioned in the speech. Do not lose sight of the argument. In this way, although the images are personal, they also serve to illuminate the specific point that the writer is trying to make. The idea behind communicating the speech to the rest of the group as if it was a lecture supports this – you are opening the speech up, not just for yourself but also for the benefit of an audience.
