âFUCK! Fuck, fuck, fuckkkk!â I punch my steering wheel and yell at no one. Today has been great, amazing even. Iâm pretty sure Josie liked the gifts I got her, then she accepted my request to take her out in the morning. That was the last thing I expected. She was pleasantly surprised when I took her to see Grams, and Grams was excited, too. Then we had lunch, and that brought me back to memories of our first date, but I didnât dare bring it up. We chatted throughout our time together, and I swear Iâm getting through to her. Finally! I never imagined sheâd be cool with me going to dinner with her family. Something about her was different today. She had a lighter air to her. And donât get me started on the little concert that woke me up this morning.
I even imagined I could kiss her or something tonight, but now this shit came up.
Leah Peters.
Leah and I were more acquaintances than friends in high school, but after high school, she and I were going down the same path, and let's just say it wasnât a path to paradise.
I was fucked up after losing Joe. For weeks Josie and I laid around mourning. Before he died, we partied a bit and I could tell the drinking was picking up, and Josie didnât love it when Iâd take it too far and embarrass her or act like an idiot. After his death, Josie didnât say much about my frequent drunken state, but she never left my side. I could tell she was battling her own demons in a different way than I was.
Weâd fuck all hours of the day, eat crap food, and never leave our houses, whether we were at her place or my Gramsâs condo at the time. Her parents picked up on the act pretty quickly, but all we did was stay at my place more. This went on for weeks, and I knew she didnât deserve it. She needed to get better, and I wasnât doing that for her.
After she left, I was really fucked up. I swore Iâd clean up my act, but I continued trying to find the answers to my problems at the bottom of the bottle. Eventually, I stopped working and did nothing all day for months. Iâd take Grams to whatever appointment, then drop her off at home and go out and get wasted.
One day I woke up on someoneâs couch to the smell of puke on my shirt. I didnât know if it was my own or not, but Iâm sure it was. On my way home that morning I saw Leah walking down the street and remembered seeing her the night before at the house party. I pulled over and told her to get in. She was walking to her job at the smoothie joint, so I drove her there. She said sheâd give me a free smoothie for the ride. We walked
