Jack flopped back in his office chair and rubbed his eyes. He’d been staring at the damned computer screen for hours, and he could feel the beginnings of a headache in his temples. He opened the middle drawer of his desk and fished out a bottle of Advil. Popping two in his mouth, he washed them down with the cold coffee left over from lunch.

“Hey boss.” Sam, Jack’s lead foreman, stuck his head in the door.

“We’re all set in the conference room.”

Jack sighed. He needed this meeting like a hole in the head, but it marked the end of the whole problem with the new supplier, so he couldn’t blow it off. “’Kay. I’ll be right there.”

Sam nodded and exited.

Jack logged off his computer and stood, stretching to ease the stiffness from sitting so long in one position. “You need to get back to the gym, old man,” he mumbled. He picked up his jacket and slipped it on, then straightened his tie. Confident he was presentable again, he headed to the conference room.

His team was already in place, as well as the reps from Atkin Buildall, the new suppliers who had caused all the kerfuffle this past couple of days.

He made his way to the head of the table pausing to shake hands with the visitors before taking his seat and turning over the meeting to his foreman to run.

It was all information he and Sam had gone over earlier in the day, so he found his mind wandering as he tuned out.

It had been two days since his aborted attempt to meet Nyree Grant, and he was anxious for another opportunity. She had not been far from his thoughts since that night, and in fact had graced a few of his hotter dreams this past forty-eight hours. Once this meeting was over, he was planning to try again. This time, though, he’d be smart and turn off his phone.

Sam’s voice droned on, and as Jack allowed his attention to wander further, his foreman’s voice seemed to get fainter and fainter. In his mind’s eye, a picture of The Crystal Loung e formed and he could swear he heard notes of a familiar blues song echoing in his mind. He followed the echo until…

He’s there at the same table. She’s on the stage, caressing the mike like it’s a phallus as she sings the final words of the sultry ballad. As the music comes to a halt, and in the moments before the applause starts, she looks straight at him and smiles.

His heart starts to thud in anticipation. Finally the moment has arrived.

She thanks her audience, steps from the stage and walks directly to his table.

He stands up to wait for her.

“Hi,” she says, looking up into his eyes.

“Hi yourself.” Not terribly witty or clever, but all that’s needed. The eyes and body language are saying so much more.

He holds her chair for her, then takes his own seat. He waves to the waitress who comes to take their drink order.
