Chapter Eighteen

Mammoth

I see the brothers out purposefully, to have a word with Rip. “A word, Pres,” I call to him.

He nods and we walk away from Rose to talk. “What's up, brother?”

“Red was abused, she had meds in the cabinet from The Centre, and shit, when she was out of it, she was screaming for someone to stop,” I state, clenching my fists tight.

“Fuck, you want us to do some digging? See what we can find?” he asks.

“Yeah. Rose said to wait for her to tell me, but I'm not so sure I can wait that fucking long. I don’t need to know the details, I just need to know who the fuck it was so I can tear the motherfucker apart,” I growl, feeling the rage surface.

“I hear you, brother, and I promise we will get the fucker that did this.” Rip grabs my shoulder, squeezing it before turning and leaving.

I walk back to the house, bringing my anger under control. All that anger I felt towards her for keeping Leland from me has long gone. I got a glimpse of what she has been through, and she has been through enough.

The first thing I see when I enter is Leland, laid with Red, cuddled into her, fast asleep. I lean over the sofa and stroke his soft hair.

“All the excitement has tired him out.” Red smiles up at me.

I lean in and kiss her softly on the lips, and she sucks in a breath, clearly surprised. I pull back slightly and look into her shocked eyes. Smiling, I kiss her head. Walking around, I take Leland off her to put him to bed, letting her sit there so it can sink in that I just kissed her. It’s my way of letting her know that I'm here, and I ain’t planning on fucking going anywhere.

I lay Leland down in his cot after changing his diaper, and he's so out of it, he barely stirred. “Night, son,” I whisper as I kiss his head.

I turn around and stop, seeing Red stood in the doorway, watching me. She tilts her head for me to follow her, so I do. I can't wipe the smile that forms on my face as I know she's going to chew me out for kissing her.

We walk into the kitchen and I get to the fridge and pull out a beer, opening the oven door to check on dinner. “For God’s sake, will you just stop?” Red snaps.

Smiling, I turn to her, leaning against the counter.

“I'm checking on dinner, and you need to eat, so you can take your medication,” I state.

“I know, I am an adult, I have been taking care of myself and Leland just fine, so far. I need to sit down,” she huffs, flopping into a chair.

“Calm down, you're not well, and I never said you didn’t,” I answer back.

“I mean, I don’t see you for months, years even, and then suddenly, ta-da! There you are, all the damn time. I
