CHAPTER ELEVEN

Wind pulled the branches back and forth in soothing patterns. Leaves were stacked on either side of the path in neat piles, but Heidi could see that they covered the forest floor rust and gold carpeting. It was beautiful, she thought, the woods at this time of the year.

James stood with his back to her, staring out into the distance, eyes focused past the edge of the tree-line. Heidi could tell that he looked tense, from the way his shoulders were knit together and how she could see every rippling muscle in his back. He wore a charcoal grey turtleneck and a pair of ripped blue jeans. She took this opportunity to take him in, memorizing his broad shoulders and the way the jeans clung to his toned ass. If he was any other man, she would want to jump him instantly. But her professor? She wasn't ready to give up her professional reputation and potentially everything she worked so hard for.

The wind shifted and James turned his head. Could he smell her? Heidi gave a soft smile and wave. Wow, she felt like a dork.

"You came," James said, relief obvious in his voice.

"My boss said I had to," Heidi said, her teasing voice falling just a bit flat.

"I didn't mean you had to come here," James said, serious, searching her face for any hint of hesitation.

"I know," Heidi said, flushing and looking away. "I didn't mean that. God, sorry, this whole thing is just a little awkward, you know?"

James sighed and ran a hand over his face. She noticed a stubble clinging to his cheeks. It was a little darker than usual, like James hadn't shaved regularly.

"I know," James said, "and I think that this is all my fault. I'm glad you are here, I just wish I hadn't kissed you."

Heidi's heart fell.

"Oh," she said.

"Not-" James said, then stopped, dropping his arms and turning his palms toward her.

"Look," he said, "can we try our best to move on from what happened?"

"Yes," said Heidi. She didn't want this. She didn't want any of this.

"I want to move on," she said, smiling up at him. James smiled back.

"Okay," he said. "Okay, let's pretend that this week didn't happen."

"So we will forget about all my no-call-no-shows?" Heidi asked, pleased to hear that her voice was teasing again.

"Never happened," said James, taking a few steps into the woods. Heidi followed him.

"It's amazing," said James, "that time skipped over all of last week."

"Or that the collective human consciousness just blocked out the same seven days at the same time," said Heidi.

"This sounds like something for my next research project," said James.

"Hey," said Heidi, "who said that I won't be studying that for my final project? Don't steal my ideas."

She reached out and shoved his arm playfully. Immediately, she felt a flash of embarrassment cut through her. Were they not supposed to touch? Would James think she crossed a line?

James smiled and shoved her back.

"Don't shove your boss," James said.

Heidi laughed.

The two continued in a fairly companionable silence as they made their way deeper into the forest.
