A movement in my room startled me awake.

“It’s OK, it’s just me,” Tom said as he pushed open the curtains an extra sliver to allow a tiny bit more light into the dark den I’d created for myself. “Your mom asked me to wake you up. And I think we need to talk.”

I blinked away the thick urge to roll over and go back to sleep. But he was right, I had asked to be awakened. I groaned and sat on the edge of the bed, elbows on my knees as I rubbed the crust from my eyes. “Yeah, we probably do.”

I wasn’t looking forward to this conversation. It was supposed to happen with both Jess and me in the room. We were supposed to come clean together, not that there was anything really to come clean about. But I predicted that with us being technically related by law, our new-found relationship would be a little awkward for the rest of the family.

Tom perched himself upon the arm of a battered but comfy LazyBoy I’d stashed long ago in the corner. “You feeling any better?”

“Apart from being sleep-deprived, you mean?”

“Yeah.”

“I guess… Aches are still there, but you already know that,” I said and nodded towards him, gesturing that he’d suffered just as much as I had. “How about you?”

“Same.” Tom cleared his throat. “We need to talk about Jess.”

“She knows,” I said instantly.

“I know. Not about that. We can soon deal with me keeping that from her; she’ll come around. After all, she already knows about you…”

Here it was, the dreaded moment. One half of me feared telling him, dreaded to have it all out in the open, but the other half wanted to shout it from the treetops of Scarfell, to let everyone know she was mine, and mine alone.

“I didn’t mean for it to happen, Tom,” I said, ripping off the band-aid. “I truly didn’t. I hadn’t even known it was possible. Not really.” I looked up at him, scanning his face for a reaction, but the shadows of the room concealed it. I knew I was blabbering, but I couldn’t stop.

“I love her, Tom. We’re meant to be. She’s mine. Fated and all that. Hank figured it out right away.”

Tom moved from the chair towards me, and for an instant I envisaged him shifting, lunging for me, ripping at my neck for corrupting his only daughter. But he surprised me by placing a hand upon my shoulder, giving it a squeeze.

“That’s all I needed to hear.”

At the door he turned. “I thought, at first, it was something less—lust, a fling or some nonsense. But your eyes tell the whole story. They give you away. She may be yours, but you are clearly hers, too.”

He nodded as an afterthought. He’d come for what he needed, and he left reassured that I wasn’t about to break his daughter’s heart.

“Thanks, Tom.”

He threw me a smile. “That was the easy part… Now I have to go make sure she can forgive me for keeping what I am a secret from her all this time.
