Chapter Ten
Hudson's ears pricked forward at the sound of his name.
Could she really recognize him like this? It seemed impossible. And yet ... she was his mate. She should recognize him no matter what. Sick or injured, in whatever shape they took, mates always knew each other. Always.
He stayed where he was, lying flat on the ground. Angie leaned forward, looking at him as if she was trying to see through the bear to the human part inside him.
There was a bruise on her forehead where that asshole had slammed her head into the car. At the thought of it, Hudson felt his hackles start to rise as his bear reacted to the idea of harm to his mate. Hudson forced himself calm again, the human in him pushing down his ursine instincts.
If he'd been a little faster, he would happily have mauled that dirtbag. But in retrospect he was glad he hadn't ended up doing that in front of Angie. When he got back to his human form, though, he was going to damn well make sure she slapped her ex with a restraining order, and preferably pressed charges for assault. And, Hudson thought, he and his buddies on the smokejumper crew just might have to go by and have a little confidential chat with the guy. Man to man. Or man to bear, as it were.
"I know this is stupid," Angie said. Her voice made his ears prick forward again. "But I feel like—you are listening to me, aren't you?"
It wasn't like he could answer, at least not in words. He tried to nod, but she stiffened when he moved his head, so he subsided into stillness once again.
Having her look at him with fear had hurt. But it wasn't really fear anymore; now it was more like a cautious curiosity. Oh, how he wished he could speak to her!
"It's been nice having you around these past few days," she began, and then smiled ruefully. "Look at me. I'm talking to a bear. But really, I feel like ... I don't even know. Like I should be thanking you for helping me, I guess. So, thank you. Thank you very much."
I'd do it again, he wanted to say. Actually, I'd do more, if I could. Like find a deep hole to bury that creep in.
But he couldn't say it, and couldn't come closer without making her run away. All he could do was enjoy the temporary feeling of peace between them. This was the closest he'd been to her since she'd told him to leave.
Then something intruded on this temporary haven, snapping him out of his relaxed state.
He smelled smoke.
