Chapter 28

1030Z (0130hr AKST) Five miles south of the cabin

F ive miles into the trip back to the Podmoskovye, the recently repaired snowmobile’s engine sputtered several times and then stalled. They all climbed off the snowmobiles, and Eldon pulled the cover up to examine the engine. He shined his flashlight around the engine but couldn’t find anything wrong. Darrin consulted his map and determined there was a cabin only a quarter of a mile away. James and Willie unhooked the sleds. Darrin and Eldon climbed aboard their only operating snowmobile and headed for the cabin to see what they could scavenge.

They covered the distance in a couple of minutes. They stopped about 150 feet from the cabin and quietly walked in closer. They didn’t use their flashlights. The cabin was dark, and Darrin couldn’t see any smoke coming from the chimney with his commercial third-generation NVGs. A small three-walled pole barn was set about fifty feet from the cabin, and it had two snowmobiles and an old Ford pickup truck parked in it. They went into the barn to check out the snowmobiles and look for fuel. They flipped on their red-lensed flashlights. The snowmobiles looked to be in good condition, but they had electric starters and their batteries were missing. Before they could look any further, two spotlights lit them up from the cabin and four green lasers danced across their chests. They dove for cover behind the pickup.

A voice from the cabin yelled, “Who the fuck are you, and what do you think you’re doing?”

Darrin yelled back, “I’m State Trooper Darrin Logan! My partner’s hurt and his snowmobile ran out of gas! We didn’t think anyone was home!”

The angry voice in the cabin yelled, “Bullshit! Troopers come to the door! They don’t steal in the dead of night! Get the fuck off my property! If we see you again, we’ll kill you!”

Darrin and Eldon got up and ran for it. The occupants of the cabin popped off a few rounds to hasten their departure. They got back to their snowmobile and cleared out as fast as they could. Darrin yelled over his shoulder to Eldon as he drove away, “Everybody in this fucking country has guns!”

Eldon replied, “At least their aim was bad!”

Darrin shook his head. “They had lasers! If they wanted to hit us, we’d be dead!”

They drove back to the others on the trail.

As they arrived, James asked, “Is everything alright? We heard gunshots.”

“Yes, we just ran into some more cowboys,” Darrin replied.

James turned to Eldon. “You’re a lucky man.”

Eldon was puzzled. “What do you mean?”

James grabbed Eldon’s parka hood and stuck his fingers through two holes. Eldon’s eyes went wide with the knowledge he had almost died. Darrin pulled out his map again to find another cabin. Within a minute, he found another likely candidate about a mile further down the trail.

“This time I’ll go to the door,” he muttered mostly to himself as he folded his map and put it in the inside pocket of his parka.
