Tyler smiled in triumph as he guided Dawn to the elevator. He had a feeling she hadn’t told the truth about what she’d been thinking about, but she’d revealed something else, and he was grateful. He had no idea why the word princess had bothered her, but he was sure it would no longer be an issue.

He hadn’t been lying when he’d explained his reasoning. He’d never used the pet name on another woman, and he didn’t plan to. Dawn had agreed to marry him, as long as the week went well, and he intended to stand with her before the judge on Sunday.

They might need some time to work out the details, he wasn’t a fool to think everything would be perfect after one week, but he was confident they would have a strong relationship based on love, trust and mutual desire.

They went to his favorite sandwich shop for lunch. The place was crowded, and a little loud, but it allowed her a glimpse at many of the town’s residents. After they found a table, the little girl from the night before came running up and plastered herself to his side.

“Tyler! Tyler!” she shrieked.

She wore the pink swimsuit and matching sandals again, and he picked her up and put her on his knee.

“Hi Lily,” he said. “Going swimming again?”

The little girl nodded, and wiggled away from him.

“I’m so sorry,” the girl’s mother said. “She saw you and pulled away before I could stop her. I can’t thank you enough for your help last night.”

“You’re pretty,” the girl said, staring up at Dawn.

“Thank you. You’re very pretty, too,” Dawn said, smiling down at the girl.

“It’s not a problem,” Tyler said to the woman. “Dawn, this is Lily, the little girl I helped last night, and this is her mother, Mrs. Fowler. Mrs. Fowler, this is my fiancé, Dawn.”

He expected her to dispute the label, but she stretched out her hand and exchanged pleasantries with the woman.

“It’s nice to meet you,” Dawn said.

“It’s nice to meet you, too. Congratulations to you both,” Mrs. Fowler said. “Lily, it’s time to say goodbye. Daddy’s waiting for us.”

“Bye Tyler,” she said, grabbing her mother’s hand. “Bye pretty lady.”

“Bye Lily,” they said in unison, and watched the pair walk away.

He turned back to see Dawn smiling wistfully after the girl.

“Did you know they’d be here?” she asked when she noticed him watching her.

“No, I didn’t,” he laughed. “Honest.”

“You did a good thing, helping them,” she said. “I’m sorry I didn’t believe you.”

He couldn’t believe she admitted her disbelief out loud, but he was happy she did. It might be a small victory, but it was a start and it only confirmed his convictions.

“It is a pretty fantastical story,” he conceded. “Not knowing me, I can understand your doubt, but I can assure you I’ll always be honest with you.”

“Thank you, Tyler,” she blushed.

Before he had time to figure out the reason for her pink cheeks, his number was called.

While he was gone, it seemed as if Dawn let some of her walls crumble.
