The next morning, I was so tired. So damn tired. I could burn the candle at both ends as well as anyone, but it was much harder when I couldn’t lose my temper and get into a decent fight. Still, Josie had scheduled me the afternoon off for a trip to the mountain, and she was right, it was easier to stay calm knowing there were only a few hours until I was free.

I was sitting in my office, reviewing the CCTV tapes of last night, checking if anything needed attention from when we’d left, when Merrick came in.

“Time for coffee, Sebastian?”

I glanced up warily. To my surprise he was smiling.

“Yeah, sure.” I was so shocked, I couldn’t think of a reason to refuse.

“It’s okay, I’m not here for any problems.” Merrick swung a chair around and sat in it backwards. “Just wanted to say that last night went brilliantly.” He paused while a server brought in two steaming cups.

“Mmm,” he said. “Yes, it was very satisfying seeing Juna so unhappy and having nothing to complain about.”

I laughed. “That makes it worth the effort.”

“Effort?” He cocked an eyebrow at me. “I thought you seemed to be enjoying it when I looked in.”

I felt my face heat up. “None of your business. Is it?”

“Oh, no.” He retreated hastily. “But we can share a joke, can’t we?”

“I suppose.” I wondered when my own brother had become scared of my temper. We’d been friends once. “Yeah. No, I don’t mind.” I needed to get that friendship back.

“Good. I’ve been worried about us losing touch. In here.” He tapped his forehead. “Even though we see each other every day for business, we need to keep that family thing going.”

“Yeah, I see what you mean.” We talked for a bit, and after a quiet morning I went up the mountain again.
