CHAPTER SEVEN

Lucy put one foot in front of the other and ran. Her mind was spinning. Her body was fevered, and she felt the icy cold chill across her body and embraced it.

She gave no thought to the fact that she was naked. Nor to the snow coming down around her. She just needed to get somewhere- only she didn’t know where.

It called to her like a fire in her blood. A strange scent in the air that felt like an itch clawing beneath her skin. Wherever it was that she was going- she just needed to get there and fast.

Her ears heard him calling through the howling wind. A part of her wanted to go to him, and yet there was something within her, anger, fear, a sense of disdain that kept her from turning back.

The snow came down sideways across the land in waves and blinded her to her surroundings. Still she ran. It felt as if her very life depended on it.

Fire and ice mixed in the heart of her. Desperation called to her and kept her going. One foot in front of the other and she would reach her goal.

The scent grew stronger. The winds grew louder. Her heart hammered its own beat.

A sound. A rumble. Thunder.

It was a shadow set against the snow. Larger than life. It filled her with loathing, fear, and yet need.

Faster now. As fast as her newfound strength could carry her. Another rumble, a warning growl, and she slowed- stopped as her eyes tried to see what her heart knew she would find.

It moved slowly forward as if testing the space between them. As if stalking her. Closer until her heart threatened to burst from her chest.

“No!” Shane was close.

The shadow reared up. Taller than any man. Fear struck inside of her and she wanted to turn and run, but it was too late.

It dropped down, coming towards her fast. Another rumble. Another warning growl and it was there, visible through the veil of white.

Bear.

Shane’s hands locked around her upper arms and he tossed her around behind his back. She could hear his heart hammering. She could hear the thunder of his growl and it wrapped around her body and told her that she was safe, for now, from everything, and yet there was fear from her mate too- she could scent it.

“Shane…?”

The bear roared. Shane answered. Instinctively she knew that he was going to fight for her, but why? She’d been running towards that bear, she knew it deep down…

“Jackson… she’s mine!” Shane growled. His voice sounded urgent. Pained.

Jackson shifted into his human form and stalked towards Shane and the female. He scented the air as he went, but he already knew what he’d find. A newly bitten female.

“What did you do?” Jackson’s voice was deep and held his beast within it. His eyes were on fire with the rage that tore through him. He didn’t wait for an answer- he reached out and backhanded Shane across the face, knocking him sideways and exposing the female that stood behind him.
