Chapter Six

Laila wore a grin wide as the sun as Tristan dropped her off at the dock. What had just happened between them had been one for the record books. Absolutely marvelous and she had loved every minute of it. But she had to work now. Duty called. Her client had a new task for her in the city.

“Katie. Your car works again, right?”

“Kind of.”

“What do you mean, kind of?”

“You know, they towed it back and the wheels are on it. It just kind of makes a sputtering noise when you start it up.”

“But you had the problem fixed, right?”

“Didn’t need to. Like I said, it starts.”

“Yes. But it doesn’t keep going.”

“I’m not the one with the billionaire boyfriend. That’s Haley.”

“Mate,” Laila corrected. “If we’re going to properly appreciate this shifter thing, then Haley is his mate.”

Despite the lightness of her tone, Laila thought the difference was significant. The existence of shifters was still news, but because of their relationship with Haley, both she and Katie had an insider’s view, and Laila thought it was incumbent upon them to learn as much as they could. In point of fact, Ethan was a dream, and if he was representative of shifters, well then, shifters didn’t worry her at all. Sure, the notion of being mauled still crossed her mind occasionally, but so far, Haley had been fine, and the country had fallen in step. People were more curious than they were scared.

For Laila, personally, the thing she was most curious about were the identities of the other shifters out there. The notion of people living different and unusual lives had fascinated Laila since she was a little girl. She had always been intrigued by forgotten tribes and far off places, and here was an entire group living a secret life in humanity’s midst. Her mind reeled at the possibilities. Were there other shifters in the area? What were they like?

As far as she knew, Ethan hadn’t yet introduced them to any of his shifter friends, but Haley had been sniffing around and he had been coy, even with her. Apparently they couldn’t reveal too much before the political announcements were made by the government. The speculation was that shifters were to be officially recognized as citizens and accorded all the rights and privileges granted therein. The idea in doing so would be to ensure the shifter population that their rights were legally protected and quell any fear that they might have of revealing themselves.

Laila couldn’t help but feel privileged to live in such interesting times. Of course, there was still the little matter of getting to the meeting with her client. Since her phone was dead, she checked her email. It said that her ride would pick her up on the beach.

On the beach? Really? What were they sending to pick her up? A boat? And then Laila heard the thump of rotors beating the air above. She looked out the window. No. Not a boat. A helicopter.
