Chapter Eight – Talal

Talal stood outside Crowe’s bedroom, leaning against the wall. Harrison walked up and stopped in front of him. “How’s he doing, Talal?”

“I don’t know. He’s not talking much. I brought him something to eat, but he doesn’t have much of an appetite. I feel like I failed him, sir.”

Harrison touched his shoulder. “He’s not your responsibility.”

“I feel like he is. We...” He hesitated to admit what they did. Maybe he had moved too fast. Wait, what was he thinking? Of course he had moved too fast. Crowe and his people had said what his life had been like in the caves. Yet, Talal had ignored that and gone after him. He was no better than Rico, sensing Crowe’s power and wanting to use him. Except Talal had hoped because he was alpha, he might be a giver. He was ashamed of himself. “I told him I would stay by his side.”

“And how were you going to do that when I gave you an order?”

“I know but...” Talal sighed. “He wouldn’t understand it in that way. I just want to protect him.”

Harrison turned and paced a bit. “Maybe you should think about mating with him.”

Talal gaped at his alpha.

“Don’t look at me like that. I’m not suggesting you force him. I’m saying as he is now he’ll only draw more ambitious shifters. I could bite him and draw more of his loyalty, but it might not work.”

“Because he’s alpha?”

“Yeah.”

Talal hesitated. “Do you and the others resent him?”

Harrison grinned. “You’ve always been pretty bold for one in your position.”

“I’m sorry, sir.”

“Don’t worry about it. I can’t say I resent him exactly, but he is a threat. His scent reminds me constantly, too.”

Jealousy rose in Talal. “You want him?”

“No! I’m bonded to Orion, and he is all I want. The memory of wanting something else is still in me. It’s confusing. Never mind. If I have a problem, I’ll talk to my mate. Take care of Crowe. I don’t know what we’ll do, but something will have to be done with him.”

Talal watched Harrison walk away and started at a sound inside Crowe’s room. He thrust the door open to find the bed empty and the floor unoccupied. Rushing inside, he scanned the room and then picked up another sound in the bathroom. The door was shut. Talal knocked.

“Crowe, are you okay in there?” Talal felt silly asking, but he was worried. “Crowe?”

A small cry of pain. Talal destroyed the lock and threw the door wide. Crowe sat in the tub, covered in blood. Talal gaped at the blade in his hand and jerked it away, cutting himself in the process.

“Baby, no! Don’t do this.”

“I should die,” Crowe said, no emotion in his tone. “No one will be caused any more trouble if I do.”

“Is that what you think? Well, you’re wrong!” Talal threw the knife across the room and ran out to shut and lock the bedroom door. Then he returned and climbed into the tub with Crowe. He turned on the shower and let water pour over their heads as he faced Crowe.
