Chapter Five

“Whoops, I hope I didn’t catch you at a bad time,” Birdie chuckled catching a glimpse of Cade lying naked on the floor.

Everly shoved her sister Birdie into her bedroom. She had enough drama on her plate and didn’t need her flighty sister getting up in the mix.

“Heeeey, why so pushy all of a sudden, huh? You know that Daddy’s farm belongs to me too, right?” Birdie huffed, stomping her foot.

Everly rolled her eyes. “Birdie, I don’t see you in years and you think it’s just fine to drop in on me like this?”

All of this was typical, Birdie—of course. She never made any attempt to stay in touch unless she needed money or a roof over her head.

“Look, I realize you’ve got a fine ass sexy fella just waitin’ to snuggle up with you out there—but like it or not, you and I are family...we’re stuck together, Big Sis,” Birdie sassed before flopping onto Everly’s nicely made bed.

Cade walked in, now dressed.

“You gonna introduce me, Eve?” he growled while buttoning up his shirt.

Birdie looked Cade up and down like a piece of fresh meat. She purposefully tossed her perfectly straight blonde hair and fluttered her eyes. Her flip flops annoyingly clacked on the floors.

“Birdie, meet Cade,” Everly sighed. “Cade, meet my little sister Birdie.”

“My, my... the pleasure is all mine,” Birdie, cooed raising her perfectly arched brow.

Cade scowled not sure what to make of the straw thin girl. Werebears liked their mates, plump and fertile not skinny like a bean pole.

Birdie then squinted her eyes. “I can’t put my finger on it, but somethin’ looks real familiar about you... I feel like I’ve seen you somewhere before...” she said, trying to put Cade’s name with a face.

If anyone would find out Cade’s true identity, it would be Birdie. Birdie frequently found herself in circles of very wealthy men. Mainly, because she hoped one day she’d sucker one into marrying her. Gold digger is too kind of a word for her. So, likely she knew who Cade Forrest was.

“Okay, everyone. Why don’t we just call it a night and head off to bed, shall we?” Everly suggested trying to regain control of the conversation.

“I can’t sleep. I must go out and hunt fresh meat for breakfast tomorrow morning,” Cade grunted

Birdie flashed Everly a what the hell look. The last thing Everly needed was Birdie finding out Cade is a werebear.

Everly hushed Cade. “That’s okay, sweetheart. I’ll just whip us something up. No need for hunting or whatever.”

Cade sniffed brashly, feeling that somehow Everly’s mood had changed towards him as if she were embarrassed if he acted on his natural instinct as a werebear. Cade didn’t understand why she shut him out so coldly.

“Go, Birdie. The couch is yours...” Everly insisted, knowing she’d get the very obvious hint.

Birdie took that as her cue to skedaddle. She sashayed out of Everly’s bedroom.

Cade didn’t skirt around issues. What just happened kept plaguing his mind.

“What was that back there? Why would you disrespect me in front of your sister?” Cade asked.
