Chapter 5

Savannah

“You’re a shockingly good cook,” I say as I finish the last bite of French toast on my plate. The thick brioche, the custardy coating, the salty butter and the sweet maple syrup all mingle on my tongue, and I sigh with pleasure. “I gotta admit, when you said breakfast, at first I thought that was some weird euphemism for sex.”

Wyatt chuckles and pops a piece of bacon in his mouth before settling back. “Nah, now that you know I have a thing for you, I’ll just come right out and ask for that.”

I sip my coffee and nearly groan. Perfect dark roast. Is everything perfect with this guy?

“Well,” I say as I set down my cup and lick my lips. “Don’t wait too long.”

His pupils dilate and he gives me a hot look. My center pulses, and my lips part in unconscious invitation.

“Oh, I won’t,” he says smoothly. “Count on it.”

I’m about to sweep the entire breakfast spread to the floor and have my wicked way with him right there when Terrence leaps onto the table and grabs a strip of bacon in his teeth.

“Goddamn it, Terrence,” Wyatt growls as he swipes at Terrence, who quickly leaps out of reach. I giggle helplessly as he rises to his feet and chases Terrence around the room, struggling vainly to reclaim the pilfered bacon.

“What are you going to do with it if you get it back?” I ask.

“Throw it in the yard and give him something to stare at through the window,” Wyatt grumbles as Terrence disappears down the hall.

I raise an eyebrow. “What?”

Wyatt blushes bright red, and it’s so cute that my belly, full of French toast and coffee, starts to flutter all over again. “Don’t worry about it. How’s Dizzy doing so far?”

I smile as I think of my new puppy. “She’s doing great. Dying to ditch the cast, but we’ll get there. She’s so loving and sweet, and I’m just so glad that we found each other.”

“I like how you talk about her like that,” he says. “That you found each other.”

I shrug. “That’s how it is. She was always supposed to be mine. Maybe it sounds a little woo-woo, but I don’t really care. And if I hadn’t moved back from New York, she wouldn’t be mine.”

He swirls his coffee in his cup. “How come you moved back? Was it the ex?”

I chew my bottom lip. “That was part of it, but mostly I just missed everything and everyone here, and knew I didn’t want to stay out there forever. When I broke up with Garrett, it just felt like it was the right time to break up with New York, too.”

“He sounds like a dipshit,” Wyatt says. “You’re great, and whatever he did to upset you so much? Fuck him.”

“Yeah,” I say with a smile. “That’s about how I feel.” An idea hits me. “Hey, hold tight for just a second. I’m gonna go grab Dizzy for a minute to say hi to you.”

His eyes light up.
