Chapter Six

Dean

“I can’t believe I let you drag me here,” I gripe to my sister, Denise, the next day as we get out of the car in front of the Country Club. Her soon-to-be husband is a member here, and she has taken full advantage of those membership privileges. She’s even learned to play golf, though she’s yet to convince me to join her on the course.

She takes my hand. “What? You have something better to do than Valentine’s brunch with your sister?”

“As a matter of fact, I just might,” I answer as she leads me through the front door. It’s Valentine’s Day, so the place is done up with red and pink balloons and streamers.

My answer gives her pause, and she turns to me just before reaching the hostess stand. Her curly black hair, piled on top of her head, bounces precariously as she looks me up and down.

“Is it a girl?” she asks, sounding incredulous. Surprised, I feel my face heat. I suddenly know how Andy must feel when I tease her because my sister’s mouth drops open. “There’s a girl!”

I hush her as the hostess approaches us. “Table for two?”

Denise ignores her, so I answer. “Yes, please, on the patio if you have it.” I hate being cooped up inside the restaurant with all these stuffy people. It’s bad enough that my sister makes me dress up like them in too-tight trousers and collared shirts, but it’s like they take up all the air in the room, too.

“Yes, sir.” The hostess grabs two menus and motions for us to follow her. Within a matter of minutes, we have a table with a golf course view, two mimosas, and two omelets on the way.

“So, tell me about her,” Denise commands, spreading her napkin across her lap.

I shake my head. Where to begin? I can’t remember the last time I told anyone in my family about a girl. “What do you want to know?”

“Let’s start with her name.”

“Andrea. Andy.”

“When do I get to meet Andy?” she asks expectantly.

I laugh. “We’ve only been on one date.”

Denise studies me in that disconcerting way she has where it feels like she’s looking right through me. She calls it her twin intuition. “You’re serious about her.”

It isn’t a question, so I don’t say anything. I turn to look out over the golf course. Cars come and go from the parking lot, not quite concealed by the bare trees. There aren’t any golfers, but I catch sight of a woman in a wedding dress walking with a couple of other people. It makes me think of Andy.

Do you want kids? And marriage? And all that?

I didn’t, but I do now. Is that crazy? I’ve seen her all of four times, but I already know I don’t want to go another day without her. Denise reaches up and clasps my hand on the table between us.

“What are you thinking?” she asks.

“About her,” I answer. “She’s all I ever think about anymore.”

Denise laughs. “What about her do you like?”

“She’s so creative.
