Chapter 14

“Want another slice of cake? Kaley’s not going to eat hers,” Jenn asked, offering me a little rectangle of chocolate cake and buttercream. We were seated at a large table, surrounded by some of her first cousins who were pounding shots and taking pictures of each other with the disposable cameras left in the center of the tables.

I put my hand on my full belly. “No, I’m good, I think.”

We’d enjoyed a pleasant enough dinner with plenty of cocktails. I was grateful that we were staying the night in the hotel where the wedding was being held. I was in no shape to drive. Luckily, Jenn’s parents had no intention of allowing us to share a room, so they’d booked me a room of my own. I was really hoping this would keep the night from getting too awkward.

“Want to dance?” she asked. Not wanting to be a total dud of a date and knowing those cocktails would keep me nice and relaxed, I nodded, and we left the table and walked to the dance floor. As soon as our feet met the solid floor, a new song began, and I could not have picked a more awkward song for us to dance to.

“I’ll Make Love to You” by Boyz II Men.

If I was a religious guy, I’d think God was pranking me. Or at least having a laugh at my expense.

Ignoring the lyrics of the song but swaying to the beat, I kept my hand on Jenn’s hip. Even though she was in heels, she still looked up to meet my eye line.

“Did you hear R.E.M. is coming to campus this spring?”

“Really?” I asked in disbelief. Despite their popularity, they’d never had a show since I’d been a student at Lurie’s. “I need to get tickets. They’re my favorite band.”

“Mine, too,” Jenn said.

Surprised, I smiled. “I didn’t know that.”

Jenn shrugged, a tipsy and bold smile crossing her lips. “There’s a lot you don’t know about me.”

I nodded, a little impressed with tipsy Jenn…although it may have just been the alcohol coursing through my own veins that was calling the shots.

“I’m starting to see that,” I flirted back. “Soo, what else?”

“Um…” she said, looking up at the crystal chandelier above our heads. “I love football, especially the Bears.”

“Same.” I smiled. “Baseball team?”

“The Cubs, of course.” She shook her head, waving me away.

“Same.”

Maybe we have more in common than I thought.

“But, wait, aren’t you from Michigan?”

“Well, yeah, but I’ve been going to school here for a couple of years.” She looked at me like I was a little dumb for even asking, so I decided to drop it.

“Okay, where do you stand on Brad Pitt?”

She wrinkled her nose. “He should’ve gone into modeling. Not acting.”

“That’s what I’m saying,” I said, my eyes wide.

“I hate The Real World. Those people annoy the crap out of me.”

“Jenn, seriously? It’s like you’re reaching into my brain right now,” I said, aghast…and pleasantly surprised. “I can’t stand that shit. The whole concept of TV shows that follow real people around is just stupid.
