Chapter Five
THROBBING PAIN SHOT through my muscles. It didnât take long to remember what had happened. With my hands tied behind my back, I understood that I was being held against my will. A no-brainer, all things considered.
Someone had attacked me.
I opened my eyes and gained my bearings. Frantically, I searched the room. Someone else was seated across from me but who? I blinked but it was no use. I was trying too hard.
Squeezing my eyes shut again, I retraced my last steps. I was struck from behind and now restrained which meant my cohorts were currently unavailable.
Someone groaned.
âCarter?â I lifted my head and tried to make out the figure in front of me.
âWhy couldnât you just stay asleep?â Carter asked.
âGuess itâs too late to apologize now.â
He was right, of course. If I hadnât set my alarm with intentions of being an annoyance, we wouldnât have been in this predicament. Weâd be dreaming of sugar plums or at least a piping hot breakfast at Francineâs.
âWho were you expecting, Hun?â
âAgent Pre...Nichols?â I focused on a nearby ottoman. âWhat are you doing?â I yanked my arms and wiggled my fingers. Secured ropes. Fabulous. âWhatâs wrong with you?â Anger zipped through my veins. âUntie me!â
Agent Pretty buffed her fingernails with an emery board. She thrust her hand forward and examined her progress. âIâd love to help but...â
âSheâs the one who tied us up,â said Carter.
The corrupt agent leapt to her feet. âNow look what youâve done! Youâve ruined the surprise!â
Carter and I exchanged glances. He shook his head in warning and I wondered if the signal meant that Ida Belle and Gertie werenât coming to our rescue.
I concentrated on Nichols. âI knew you couldnât be trusted.â
âOh? Whyâs that?â
âWell besides the fact that you canât count and have elevenâtwelve counting Rudolphâreindeers on display, you canât carry on a conversation without gushing over fellow agents which means you arenât really paying attention to the conversations.â I smirked. âMy guess is, you donât have much to add. All of that aside, I was on to you from the beginning.â
I was blindsided, didnât have a clue.
âIf thatâs true then Granny Grumps and Mammaw Madness probably cast a light of suspicion in my direction.â
âThatâs not all theyâll cast in your direction.â I dropped my head and feigned defeat but it wasnât easy. Gertie and Ida Belle took turns at the window, making hand signals and mouthing their instructions. My shoulders relaxed as soon as I saw them. The change in body language shouldâve been a true tell but Agent Pretty didnât notice.
âWhy are you doing this?â Carterâs biceps flexed and his upper body jerked. He mustâve been able to free one of his hands. As if he understood what I was thinking, he nodded once.
âCare to tell me how I earned a professional frenemy?â I knew why. Money was the root of all evil. When ten million dollars was placed on oneâs head, criminals crowded the streets and lurked around every corner.
Nichols knelt in front of me. âOh darlinâ, donât look so glum.
