CHAPTER 9

“What did I tell you?” said Danny, parting the flowering shrub, his cheeks rosy from the climb and his face covered by a fine sheen of sweat despite the chilly air. “It’s right here.”

He held tightly onto Claire’s hand, and drew her through the narrow path into a clearing. They had been walking for fifteen minutes since deviating from the path, and the crisp air had flushed their faces. An old college friend had told him about it: a secret hot pool outside of Banff, where there were no rules, no fees, and most importantly, no clothes.

“Danny, this is incredible. And nobody knows it’s here?” Claire stood on the lip of the pool, kicking off her sneakers in anticipation. The crystal water was clean and fresh, and surrounding the wide pool were tall Jack pines, offering natural seclusion and security. Sunlight dripped from above through the silver pine trees and a creeping pine dropped a leaf into the still water. Claire flashed her blue eyes at Danny and then around the circumference of the pool. “This must belong to someone. Are there cameras around?”

Danny unzipped his fleece. “I told you, already, hardly anyone knows about this place. My buddy found it when he was hiking late last summer.” He approached Claire and knelt by her feet, before dipping a hand into the pool. “Oh man, that is good.”

“Is it warm?” asked Claire. “It’s pretty cold, you know. I don’t want to catch a chill.”

Danny stood and pressed his warm hand against Claire’s cheek. “Warm enough?”

They had been dating for a few months, and Claire was besotted with Danny. He ran a garage in downtown Calgary, and they’d come out to Banff for the weekend to avoid the Stampede. The place became so saturated with visitors that Danny closed his garage for a couple of days. Claire was in her final year of her real estate program at the University of Calgary, and despite the pressure on her to succeed she was reveling in her new love-life, allowing herself just a little time off from her studies. Danny was strong, athletic and had the sort of smoldering brown eyes that drove her friends wild with jealousy.

“Warm enough for me.” Claire smiled and took Danny’s hand in hers. “Pass me my swimming costume, and let’s get in.”

Danny unhooked the pack from his back and pulled open the top. He pulled out a bottle of wine concealed in a towel and two plastic glasses. Placing them carefully by the side of the pool, he took off his fleece and began to unbutton his shirt.

Claire watched with growing amusement. “Are you going to hand me my costume? I thought you were a gentleman?”

“Me?” Danny, now shirtless, kicked off his boots and began to unbutton his pants. “I think you’ve got me confused with someone else.” He winked at Claire, stripped naked, and jumped into the hot pool.

Claire shrieked as the water splashed her. “Danny, what the heck?”

Danny resurfaced, and swept his wet brown hair back.
