Chapter Eighteen

Judgment Day

As the ship entered the harbor and docked a full contingent of guards began to assemble at the end of the gangway. By the time the ship was tied up and we were able to disembark, there were fifty guards present. As we disembarked, a guard met us at the bottom of the gangway, “You there! The Overlord has requested that you meet with him right away.”

Kritt, “I am one of the Overlord’s instructors, may I ask the reason?”

“Sir, all we know is that we were asked to bring you to see him. So please surrender your weapons and come with us quietly.”

None of us felt well and we were outnumbered four to one. We surrendered our weapons and followed them to the Overlord. The guards took us to the cell house, not to the Overlord. I knew something had happened but I did not know what it was. When we left for Valklund, there were no signs of trouble. Now two weeks later we were all in a cell. The Overlord must have discovered something and I figured that we would find out soon enough. We hid the battle plans the best we could in our undergarments. After about three hours, the guards came to take us to the Overlord. We were brought to a large room where I saw the Overlord. As we entered the room I knew that a tribunal had been called and we were about to go on trial. The Overlord was the leader of the tribunal and his generals and senators made up the rest. We were brought to the floor below the tribunal in the center of a horseshoe shaped table.

A guard, “Attention, attention, this court is now called to order on the 86th day of the year 660 WR in the capital of the great Kingdom of Jongg. Stand forth and be heard.”

Trolem asked, “Why are we…”

Overlord, “Silence! You stand accused of crimes against the people of Jongg and you will not speak until you are spoken to. How do you plead?”

Trolem was about to speak when I gently grabbed his arm and stepped forward. I had a strange premonition, “What are we suppose to have done?”

“All I want to know is how do you plead?”

“What are we supposed to have done?”

“All I want to hear from you is either guilty or innocent.”

“I cannot claim innocence or guilt, if I do not know what we are supposed to have done!”

“You stole from the people of Jongg, now how do you plead?”

“What are we supposed to have stolen?”

The Overlord stood, pounded his fists on the table and yelled, “How do you plead?!”

“We are innocent. We have stolen nothing from the people of Jongg. All we have done is execute our duties faithfully as instructors. Ask your captain of the guard. We have helped him train some of the best men at arms you have ever had. Ask your guard over there (I pointed at the guard at the door). I remember him from the practice fields.
