This is not my life. Sophie wasn't sure whose life it was— maybe Mischa Barton's—but it definitely didn't belong to her. Sophie Bushell didn't cruise the Pacific Coast Highway in a silver Mercedes convertible in the middle of the week. Sophie Bushell didn't stop to have her picture taken by a photographer from People magazine. Sophie Bushell didn't dine with up-and-coming movie stars who made Tom Cruise look like “the ugly guy” on the list they'd made for Kate.
Maybe her afternoon with Trey Benson wasn't happening at all. Maybe she'd had a horrible accident on the 101, and she was lying in some hospital bed in a deep coma. She could almost hear Angela at her side, begging her only daughter to return to consciousness. Even Trey's outfit, light gray slim-cut pants and a semi-fitted plain white t-shirt, was probably a figment of her imagination.
“What's your name?” At first, she thought Trey was talking to her. Then she realized a freckled giggling tweener had approached their table, paper napkin and pen in hand, to ask for an autograph.
Sophie snapped out of her reverie, hoping that Trey hadn't noticed she'd disappeared. If he had, she'd blame it on the dolphins she'd seen out the window. Everyone took a moment to enjoy a frolicking dolphin.
“I'm Olivia,” the giggler squeaked, glancing over at her mother to make sure she was getting a digital photo of the exchange.
Halfway to Malibu, Trey had decided it was too windy for corn dogs on the beach. Instead, he'd taken Sophie to Gladstone's for smoked salmon bruschetta and crab cakes. Large and airy, with comfortable booths and a view of the Pacific, Gladstone's was—according to Trey—a must-visit for anyone new to LA. The restaurant was also, apparently, a tourist destination. Since they'd sat down half an hour ago, overexcited pale-faced eaters who had probably traveled hours to do the Universal Studios tour had been staring at Trey and whispering.
The giggler, now identified as Olivia, turned shyly to Sophie after Trey had handed back her freshly signed Gladstone's napkin. “Can I have yours, too?” she asked eagerly, her blue eyes big with hope.
Sophie was grateful her caramel skin camouflaged the blush she knew was rising to her cheeks. “I'm not famous. Sorry.”
But Trey's brown eyes had a mischievous glint. “Don't be modest, Sophie. Give the girl an autograph.”
Sophie stared at him. He grinned back, nodding toward the girl. She felt her blush deepen as she realized that Trey wanted her to pretend to be a Somebody as opposed to a Nobody.
“Please?” Olivia was sort of hopping up and down. Sophie had the sense that this was the most exciting thing that had happened in her short suburban life.
For a few seconds, she was frozen in the booth, torn between wanting to please Trey Benson and wanting to slip under the table to hide among crab cake scraps and lobster shells. Then again…Sophie was an actress. And she looked like she could be famous in her skintight Diesel jeans and
