Chapter Eleven

Barracuda

“Is she okay?” Mitzy asked.

I nodded and sat at the kitchen table. “She’s working.” The question Mitzy should have asked was if I was okay.

I was not.

In a few sentences, Rayna had managed to pick apart and get straight to the truth of the past twelve years of my life.

I blamed myself for everything that had happened.

Charlene.

Leona.

Tank.

“Quinn is calling,” Monk called. He walked into the kitchen and connected the call. He put it on speaker and laid the phone in front of me. “You there?” he called.

“I’m here, Monk,” Quinn replied.

“I got you on speaker with the whole club.” Monk turned and tipped his chin to Mitzy.

She threw up her hands. “Club business,” she grumbled. “I get it. I’ll be upstairs with Willem and the girls.” She grabbed the containers with their lunch and marched up the stairs.

“She took that a hell of a lot easier than any of the ol’ ladies here,” Quinn laughed.

“Normally, she throws hands, Quinn. Don’t let her fool you,” Monk laughed.

Quinn let out a loud laugh. “I think the RBMC ol’ ladies would get along just fine with the King’s ol’ ladies then.”

“You are right,” I laughed.

“So, how are things going there?” he asked. “I’m sure it’s a hell of a lot warmer there than it is in Michigan.”

“The weather is nothing we ever really have to worry about here, Quinn,” I replied. “The rest of the shit going on here is another story.”

“Well, hopefully, I can help you get all of the shit sorted out.” The phone was muffled, and Quinn hollered for someone to hold on.

“You in the middle of something?” I asked.

Quinn chuckled. “You could say that. Dyno and Fancy are about to get married. I’m supposed to be the best man.”

“Yeah, you’re in the middle of something,” Rebel laughed. “Prudence would have my ass if I was on the phone when a wedding was going on.”

“I’ve got about twenty minutes before Fancy will be ready. We’re already an hour past the time she said it was going to happen. Core and Rhino are keeping the pastor loose with shots of whiskey,” Quinn explained.

“My kind of pastor,” I joked.

“He’s kind of got me wondering if he can hold his alcohol, though.” Quinn paused. “Core just had to get him a chair,” he laughed.

A round of laughter went up.

“Sounds like he needs to be dipping into the communion wine a bit more,” Six-Gun pointed out.

“We don’t need to keep you any more than we need. You find out anything about the other guy who worked with Menace?” I asked.

“Blink,” Quinn said. “He was a fucking moron.”

That was his name. Quinn had mentioned when I was in Michigan last week, but it hadn’t stuck with me. “Do you think you’ll be able to get in to talk to him? We’re running around with no real idea of where to look for Miller.”

“Kaye still has some connections on the force. She’s working on me getting in there to talk to him. We need a couple of days,” he explained.
