PHOEBE’S EYES drifted shut. Emotions, thoughts stirred and blew though her like gossamer fabric fluttering in the breeze. Complete. Replete. Making love with Ryan had brought a pleasure, a completeness so clear and pure, it evoked a piercing melancholy.

She absorbed the texture of his skin against hers, the heat of his hair-sprinkled belly, the fine coating of sweat that slicked them both, the fragrant musk produced by their union.

With startling clarity, Phoebe realized she’d always withheld something of herself during lovemaking. An emotional reserve. A part of her that was hers alone, a part of herself she was unwilling to share. Participation without full engagement. But with Ryan, there’d been no holding back. It hadn’t been a conscious decision, it had just happened. She’d given all of herself. In return, she’d realized gratification she’d never known before.

Next to her, Ryan moved, his fingers playing along the line of her hip, his breath warm against her cooling neck. “You asleep, Phoebes?”

“No.” Eyes still closed, she smoothed her foot against his calf, enjoying the tactile play of hair and muscle against her arch. One last time. Phoebe opened her eyes, reluctant to deal with the practicalities of their relationship quite so soon. Knowing, however, that she couldn’t languish in the aftermath of lovemaking forever. She shifted her leg off his. “No. I’m not asleep.”

He dragged his fingers across her stomach, as if he, too, was reluctant to give up the contact. God, they’d just made everything worse. They’d debunked nothing except their own foolishness.

Rolling to the other side, Phoebe put the width of the king-size mattress between them. She tugged the edge of the comforter over her, suddenly self-consciously aware of her near nudity. Thongs didn’t count for much in the coverage department. “Yep. Good thing we got that over with.” Awkwardness, the aftermath of spent passion and uncertainty in how to proceed, settled between them.

“So, what do you—”

“Want to—”

They both laughed, rounding off the sharp edge of tension. Phoebe made the mistake of looking at him. All of him. Splendidly, rousingly naked. Ryan wasn’t just a hottie. He was a one-man, twelve-alarm fire waiting to happen. Even now, her body stirred in response to his nudity and proximity. And that wasn’t part of her plan. She’d figured that making love once would dispel the mystique. Only it hadn’t. What a disaster. Phoebe trained her eyes on his face, determined to look no farther south than his neck. “Go ahead.”

“No. You first.”

“You. I insist.”

“Okay.” Ryan shrugged, and Phoebe swallowed hard. Amazing, really, how many well-honed, sleek muscles tightened and rippled and generally put on a sensual show when a naked man shrugged. “I was going to ask if you were ready to go to bed?” A banked fire smoldered in his eyes.

“Here?” Phoebe closed her eyes, envisioning them wrapped in each other’s arms. “Of course you mean here.” The idea of crawling beneath the sheets with Ryan, his smell and taste still imprinted on her, didn’t seem such a clever idea. She shook her head.
