“Watch out for the poo,” Jack said. He grabbed Skyler’s arm and pulled her aside before she stepped in it. The oxen shifters used this path to carry the cut logs from the pit to the river. Sometimes the animals used it as a bathroom as well.

“Eww,” Skyler said, hopping over it. “You saved my life.” She looked up at him and smiled.

Jack’s heart swelled as he held her arm. Her gorgeous white teeth showed through the tiny cracks in her soft, pink lips. She had a cute freckle under her bottom lip that he hadn’t noticed before. He wanted to study her face for hours; to find and discover every detail. Every freckle, every line, every kissable inch.

“I’m not going to fall,” she said. “Can I have my arm back?”

“Of course,” he said, shaking his head clear of his dreamy thoughts. He released her and she walked along beside him. He glanced up ahead for a patch of ice, a pile of poo, a booby trap, quicksand, any excuse to touch her again.

Jack had liked the feeling of her on his arm. He glanced over at her in her fancy baby blue jacket and white snow pants and then glanced down at his old jacket with the holes and dirt spots that had been there as long as he could remember. She wouldn’t go for me.

He pictured the type of guy that she would go for: cleanly shaven with a smile that showed off his dazzlingly bright white teeth. His perfect blond hair would be hair sprayed into a rock and combed to the side. He would walk around with a navy blue polo and beige slacks, looking like he was straight out of a Ralph Lauren catalog. He would have a name like Chip and take her to his cottage that had been in his family since the 1800’s. They would discuss French poetry and the latest exhibition in the art museum.

Jack sighed. Girls like her didn’t go for guys like him.

A guy wearing nothing but a scowl on his face walked across the path in front of them, flashing his bare…everything, their way. He must have just phased from his animal form.

“Dude!” Jack called out. “There’s a lady here.”

“Sorry,” the guy said, hiding his junk in embarrassment. His body buckled over and began to shake. Silver gray hairs sprouted from his muscular body as he transformed. The man burst into a mountain lion and sprinted off into the forest.

“Sorry about that,” Jack said as if it was his fault.

She laughed in response. “I grew up here,” she said. “I’ve seen it all.”

“You grew up here?” he asked in shock.

“Born and raised,” she said, looking up at the trees. “I’m not surprised that my Dad didn’t talk about me.” She leaned her head to the side, looking up at him. “I’m the dirty family secret,” she whispered. “A human for God’s sake!”

Jack couldn’t imagine Skyler being a family secret. If she was in his family he would show her off every chance he got.
