Chapter Eleven

Zamora stopped by the local market to pick up a sandwich for the day before she headed to her shop to clean and do payroll. She’d gotten the orders done on Sunday and now only waited on deliveries. In the meantime, the floors needed to be mopped, the windows, mirrors and bathroom needed cleaning, and the employee paperwork needed to be done. Thank God tax season is over.

She parked behind her shop and entered through the back, her mind switching from the dreary chores to the morning she’d had with Greg. He’d found out something difficult from the doctor she knew, but she suspected he needed time to process it before he told her. Not that he was required to tell her, but she hoped he would. Whatever he’d learned had hurt bad enough to make a SEAL cry. He’d been heartbroken, of that she was sure.

And he’d hugged me like his life depended on it.

She let herself into her office, shaking her head. Despite his unhappiness, she’d enjoyed holding him when he needed support. She liked being there for him. You need to stop those thoughts right now. No good could come from them. They were friends-with-benefits, and they were damn good benefits if last night had been any indication. But still, that’s all they’d agreed to. Neither of them were looking for anything else.

She reminded herself he’d just gone through a divorce as she sat down at her desk and booted up the computer. Emotionally unavailable, remember? It didn’t seem to have any effect on her heart. The traitorous organ only wanted more of his attention and company. Ugh, I’m hopeless.

Zamora threw herself into payroll, reconciling hours worked with wage rates and taxes. She let the computer chew over the numbers and forced herself to go clean the bathroom. She required the employees to clean it each night, but made sure she performed a more thorough cleaning each week to get whatever they missed. And sometimes that equated to a lot.

She finished the bathroom and checked the computer to scan her emails for any delivery confirmation or questions. Nothing jumped out at her, so she returned to the main room and ran some water to mop the floors.

She’d just filled the bucket when someone knocked on the door. She strode to the front to let in her ink delivery. Melvin, the driver for Inkworx, greeted her with his lopsided smile and wheeled in the crates filled with a rainbow of India ink. He rarely spoke aloud because of his deafness, but she’d taken a class on American Sign Language just to communicate with him when he came by. She didn’t have the skill he did, but she could sign enough to have stilted conversations.

“You seem distracted, Z,” he signed. “Everything okay?”

She smiled, shrugged, and nodded.

Melvin dropped his chin, and shot her a dubious look from under lowered brows.

She laughed. “Have lot on my head. Made new friend. Needs help.”

His brows rose. “What kind of help? Not financial, right?”

She shook her head.
