Fifth arabesque

This arabesque is a prehistoric dinosaur. You don’t see it often today in choreography, and you may have to really pay attention to catch it in performance. But if you’d like to see it, take a look at Figure 9-4e.

Lifting Your Leg Behind with a Bent Knee (Attitude)

If you practiced the moves in Chapter 8, surely you remember the attitude, the graceful bent-knee alternative to the arabesque.

The attitude is man’s best friend — and not just because it looks like a dog at a fire hydrant. It’s much easier to perform than the arabesque while turned out; it makes you feel looser on those stiff days (especially as you get older); it makes you appear more limber than you are; and it even looks good when performed low (at 45 degrees off the floor). The weight of your lifted leg in attitude is less than in arabesque , and the strain on your back is also less. We love the attitude.

Herewith, the basic attitude positions in center floor.
