the muscles of the legs needed in jumping. When done to the demi-pointe, it exercises the foot also.

Description As the foot of the working leg comes to a pointed position either in front of or behind the supporting ankle, the supporting leg bends deeply into demi-plie with the supporting heel firmly on the floor. The developpe of the working leg occurs simultaneously with the straightening of the supporting leg, and then both legs bend at the same time to begin the exercise again [30].

Cautions The battement fondu should be done smoothly without pauses at any stage. Care must be taken that both legs remain turned out throughout the exercise. Because the exercise is very strenuous, it should not be repeated a great number of times.

Suggestions Do not attempt the battement fondu until the more elementary barre exercises have been mastered. In the first attempt, the unfolding of the working leg should be limited to the position of pointe tendue a la seconde. Later it can be unfolded to an angle of 45 degrees, then to 90 degrees to the front and back as well as to the side. Only after the basic fondu is mastered should the exercise include a releve on the supporting foot.

PORT DE BRAS AU CORPS CAMBRE (por duh BRAH oh kor kahn-BRAY) Definition Literally, carriage of the arms with an arched body. Usually the term is used to describe the bending of the body backward or sideward from the waist or forward from the hips.

Purpose Ballet technique is more than legwork. This exercise is important because it involves movement of the head, arms, and torso, and not, as in all other barre exercises, the legs. It also limbers and relaxes the upper body and coordinates arm and head movements—all necessary for fluidity of motion.
