CHAPTER 53
STONE MADE A STOP FIRSTat the hospital to check on Reuben. He heard his friendâs voice long before he got to his room. Apparently from the little Stone could make out, Reuben wanted to leave but the doctors were unwilling to release him for several more days.
Annabelle met him at the doorway to Reubenâs room. âMaybe you can talk some sense into him,â she barked.
âI doubt it,â said Stone. âBut Iâll try.â

âIâm fine,â bellowed Reuben as Stone came into his line of sight. âItâs not like this was the first time Iâve been shot. But Iâll take a damn bullet over Nurse Ratchet here poking me with needles in places I donât want to be poked.â
The nurse taking his vitals merely rolled her eyes at Reubenâs comment. As she turned to leave she whispered to Stone, âGood luck.â
Stone looked down at Reuben. âI take it you want to leave?â
âWhat I want to do is get the assholes who did this to me.â
Stone pulled up a chair and sat down at about the time Caleb wandered in with a vase of flowers.
âWhat the hell are those?â snapped Reuben.
Caleb frowned at the manâs ungrateful attitude. âTheyâre peonies. Very hard to get this time of year.â
Reuben looked mortified. âAre you saying you brought me flowers?â
âYes. To brighten up this very depressing room. Look, itâs all gray and blah. Youâll never get well because youâll be too depressed.â
âI think theyâre beautiful,â said Annabelle as she took the flowers from Caleb and smelled them.
âYou would think that. Youâre a girl,â said Reuben. âBut guys donât bring guys flowers.â He suddenly leveled a ferocious gaze at Caleb. âDid anyone see you bring those in?â
âWhat? I⦠Well, I suppose. A few. The people at the nursesâ station were admiring them.â
Reuben, who had been sitting up in bed, collapsed back. âOh great. They probably think weâre dating.â
Caleb exclaimed, âIâm not gay.â
âYeah, but you look like you are,â shot back Reuben.
Caleb scowled. âI look like I am? How exactly do gay people look, Mr. stereotyping Neanderthal?â
Reuben moaned and put a pillow over his face. From under it they heard him grumble, âNext time bring me a beer, for Chrissakes. Or better yet, a Playboy .â
While Annabelle went in search of a vase for the flowers, Stone turned to Caleb. âI received your list of events coming up at Lafayette Park. I wanted to see you about it.â
Reuben took the pillow off his face and said, âWhere are you going with that?â
Stone quickly explained things to him and added, âBut there are a lot of events.â
âThere are,â agreed Caleb. âBut Iâve been doing some digging and Iâve been able to narrow it down.â
He pulled some slips of paper from his pocket and laid them out on the end of the bed as Stone leaned over to see them.

Caleb explained, âI started with the assumption that this must be really big. Otherwise why go to all the trouble at Lafayette Park.â
âAgreed,â said Stone.
Annabelle came back into the room with the flowers in a vase, set it down on a counter and joined them.
