“Anybody following us?” George called to Jason, who was still in the back of the Suburban. He lay prone with his legs spread out on the old shag carpet. Boxes lay on either side of him. His arms rested on the spare tire he’d taken out of its place. It was an uncomfortable position, but he was short on ammo, so he had to make every round count. They’d traveled without conversation for almost ten minutes. There was no sign of a paved road anywhere.

They appeared to be getting further away from civilization. He hoped George was right about this shortcut.

“Can’t see anybody,” Jason said. They hit a bump, and he pressed a hand against the ceiling to stabilize himself before returning it to the rifle. It had been long enough, he was probably safe to let down his guard.

He’d give it a little longer.

They drove in silence for several more minutes before George stopped the vehicle.

“Something wrong?” Jason asked, spinning to look out the front window, fearing they had just run into another problem. He relaxed when he saw they were alone as he sat up, stretching his cramping muscles.

“I have to change the tire. If I don’t, it will just get worse. This baby’s seen a lot of things over the years. I hope she sees a few more.”

“Shouldn’t we put more distance between us and Hank’s compound?” Brandy asked. “We don’t want them to catch us with our pants down.”

“Which is exactly why we need to change it now,” George said in a voice that said he wouldn’t entertain a debate. “If we run into trouble, we don’t want to be worried about a flat. It’s safe enough right now, so we’ll take care of it. If we wait for an ideal time, it will be too late.”

Jason almost pushed back on George, too, until he realized the preacher was right. He didn’t know what lay ahead or how long those men behind them would stay where they were, but they needed a functioning tire on the Suburban.

“Cody,” George said, “can I get your help?”

“You betcha.” Cody opened the door and stepped out. Jason was about to crawl over the rear seat when George opened the back door, so he just got out there instead.

“I’ll give you as much warning as I can,” Jason said after checking the rear tires. The one on the right was flat. It could have been worse. At least the tire hadn’t stripped off the rim. “We don’t have long.”

George nodded as he pulled out the spare. “We’ll be fast.”

“Make sure to put the flat back in. I’ll need it for an armrest.”

Jason walked down the road, trying to remember the lay of the land in between their position and Hank Abraham’s home. He’d been too focused on identifying signs of pursuit to pay attention. George had made at least one, possibly two turns since they had left the dirt road they took to the back of Hank Abraham’s property. Jason didn’t doubt the armed men would be far behind.
