Chapter 12
Cody sat in study hall Monday morning after gym, reading the Florida state driverâs manual. The elderly teacher who was supposed to ensure the students quietly do their homework fiddled with the cords on his computer, utterly engrossed.
âHaving fun?â Hayden asked, sliding into the desk next to him. He looked like heâd completely recovered from his hectic time in the 1850âs.
âNot really.â Cody had worried things would be weird with his friends, but he should have known Hayden would react as if nothing had happened. He had taken care of his grandparents after they were turned into turtles all in stride.
âI thought you were excited to get your license?â
âI am, but itâs like getting ready to see your favorite movie, only beforehand you have to read about how cameras are built,â Cody said.
âSpeaking of movies, when are we filming Skylerâs work of art?â Hayden pulled a heavy math book from his bag and casually flipped it open. âI was planning on drinking from my enchanted cup that makes colors look funny and I need to know when to schedule it.â
âBesides that sad excuse for fun, are you free this weekend?â
âLet me ask my friend,â Hayden said. âHey, Cody, am I free this weekend?â
âFunny. As long as I donât have to see a stupid shrink, then we can film Saturday.â
âSkyler must be thrilled filming hinges on your mental stability.â
âSo itâs pretty much fifty-fifty,â Cody joked.
âYour parents are that invested in you seeing a therapist?â
âYeah. Apparently now that theyâre settled in they remembered that I have problems.â Cody meant for it to come off as a joke, but he cast his eyes down, hoping Hayden wouldnât read too much into it.
âInstead of on the weekend, have them schedule your session during school so you can get out for a while,â Hayden suggested.
âThat might work,â Cody said, impressed with his friendâs deviousness. If he had to suffer through therapy, at least he could skip out on school to do it. âI guess we start filming Saturday.â
âHave you memorized your lines yet?â
âNot a one.â
* * * *
Codyâs parents were so happy that he agreed to see a therapist that his dad scheduled an appointment for Thursday morning with a woman his co-worker recommended. Cody took solace that he could at least sleep in some, instead of getting ready for school in the morning, but his mom woke him up a half hour early to make sure he was ready for the therapist.
Grumbling to himself, Cody stumbled into the shower and threw on his black clothes, and then waited on the couch for his session to start as his mom left for work.
Greta, an efficient looking woman in her late sixties or early seventies, arrived in a shiny European car. She wore a sparkling necklace and a silk blouse. Codyâs dad stayed late to greet her, and he fumbled over his words before reluctantly leaving for work. She seemed like a very pleasant woman, but Cody inherently distrusted any professional his parents encouraged him to meet with.
