Chapter 14
“Cleaning house, huh?” Bailey asked with a teasing smile as Spencer walked into the dining room. He and Beautiful were already at the table, Beautiful giggling about something. They looked perfect together. The scent of cooked beef made Spencer’s stomach growl.
“Yeah. Just old crap that should have been thrown out long ago.”
Bailey looked away for a second, and Spencer wondered what he’d said wrong. “What?”
“Nothing. Do you still like your steak medium rare?”
“Yessir.” It startled him that Bailey remembered.
“Good.” Bailey pointed to the platter in the center of the table. “That one is yours.”
Spencer speared it and lifted it onto his plate.
“Why’d you call him sir, Daddy?” Beautiful was watching them, and it occurred to Spencer that she had been watching them closely every time they all ended up in the same room together. It had to be confusing, and maybe even scary, for her entire life to be rearranged like this.
“I don’t know.” He spooned green beans onto his plate. “Just to show respect, I guess.”
Beautiful nodded, her hair bouncing wildly. “Bailey-dad says to always do that. Right?” She looked at Bailey for backup.
“Absolutely.”
On the surface, they looked like three perfectly normal people having supper together. Underneath, Spencer thought, it was more like two people and their mentally ill friend. He’d better get used to the feeling – he still had a year to go.
“About earlier,” Bailey started, but Spencer waved a hand.
“I was out of line,” he said. “It’s not my place to...” His voice trailed off. To what? Interfere? Worry?
“Care?” Bailey asked quietly. “I disagree. I was going to thank you for watching out for her.”
Spencer felt his shoulders sag. “I meant to say that it’s not my place to butt into your life. You and Beautiful have a good thing going, from what I can tell, and I’m sorry I didn’t just let you handle it.”
A small sigh escaped Bailey’s mouth and his eyes went soft. “That? What happened out there? That’s called instinct, Spencer. You have it, and it isn’t a matter of ‘being out of line. It’s a matter of loving your daughter.”
“What’s instinct?” Beautiful asked, looking back and forth between them.
Bailey smiled at her, and Spencer thought about how gorgeous they were together. “It’s the thing inside of daddies that makes us want to keep you safe, no matter what.”
She nodded. “You have a whole belly full of instinct, Bailey-dad, cause you keep me safe always.”
Her smile was so sweet that Spencer had to look away.
He knew it was instinct that made him do what he did earlier, but the force of it had surprised him. He had learned long ago to not follow his instincts, because most of them were fear-based. He knew to stay when everything in him screamed go, to stop and take in the whole picture before acting on any one thing. His time in Iraq taught him that it was better to think things through. More than once, that lesson had even saved his life. But all of that had deserted him today, when he’d thought that Beautiful was in danger.
