Moss Stone reached the condo building where Cindy lived, carrying a large paper bag. She opened the door for him, giving him a kiss.

“Thanks for bringing dinner. I’m starving.”

“Cheaper than going to a restaurant.” He grinned. “And I don’t have to pick out the wine.” It surprised him to see her wearing a shimmering black dress and high heels.

Cindy laughed. “It’s better if I pick out the wine, truth be told.”

“You’re right. I’d likely order a beer instead. You look great.”

She opened the bag and pulled out the containers. “Thank you.” She gave him a long smile. “Padmanadi’s is so good. I love their food.” She placed the food onto individual plates.

“You know, part of the advantage of takeout is not having to use dishes.”

“Let’s pretend we’re civilized. Open the wine. It’s in the fridge.”

Moss sighed and retrieved the wine. He read out the label, “Chateau Langlois Saumur Chenin. That’s a lot of words for white wine.”

“There’s white wine and there’s white wine. This one, a chenin blanc, has high acidity, which works well with spicy foods.”

“Okay, I’ll take your word for it.” He poured the wine into glasses and carried them to the dining room table. He took a drink of the wine. “Not bad.”

“I’m glad it meets with your approval.” She grinned as she set the plates on the table.

They divided the food and ate.

“Tell me about your latest murder. How’s the investigation going?”

“Just starting. The victim was stabbed in the back and his throat slit. Someone didn’t like him. His safe was also emptied, but we don’t know the contents of it.”

“Did he have a lot of enemies?”

“Yeah, there are a few that are glad to see him gone. He was screwing around on his wife, so it’s possible she got rid of him. Or maybe a jilted mistress. Or a jealous boyfriend.”

“But he was also robbed.”

“There is that. Maybe the robbery was the original intention, and he became a casualty. Or, he was the target, and the robbery became a bonus.”

“I would say the back-stabbing means it was personal. The throat-slash may have been the finishing touch. That’s a horrible thought. That would mean he really pissed off someone. Any leading suspects?”

“No, not yet. Alibis are all good at first look, but we’ll poke at them, and something will not quite add up.” He refilled the glasses. “This wine really is good. Goes well with the food.”

“And the food?”

He put down his fork. “Okay. I’ll admit the food is good. Damn good.”

“See, vegan food can be good.”

“I don’t disagree. It just seems a lot of work to make vegetables taste like chicken.”

“You’re hopeless.”

“By the way, Anya says hi.”

“Thanks. I’ll text her hello later. Does she have a theory on who the murderer is?”

“Yeah. She suspects the wife, who claims she was with the girlfriend that night. He was cheating on her, but I would’ve thought a gun would be more her style. A knife attack can go wrong, especially since he was bigger than her.”

“You have a point.
