Chapter 9

After he helped the nurses move Sunny out of the hallway into a proper room, Sven sought out Dr Dugard. The doctor was looking better. Not only had he managed to snatch some much-needed sleep, but the patients who were not critically injured had been dealt with and sent home. In many respects, St. Barts had been lucky. There were about a dozen people missing and more than two hundred injured, but the death toll on neighbouring Anguilla — which was essentially a sand bar — was much higher. The same was true for other nearby islands.

“No change.” The doctor took a few minutes to explain the background to Sunny’s strange pregnancy. “It’s not that unusual. Many women who have lost one twin early on aren’t even aware they were expecting twins in the first place. As for the baby, well, the heartbeat is strong and the foetus is almost twenty-eight weeks. If, God forbid, Sunny takes a turn for the worse, the child should survive. It’s still early days. Some people remain in a coma for days, even weeks and months and emerge undamaged. We will do another scan tomorrow, but so far there are no signs of injury to the brain. Just keep praying and hoping, and talk to her.”

Sven settled in for another marathon of reading, this time selecting his love letters. He interspersed his written thoughts with how he was feeling now, searching for the right words, certain that a phrase or a memory would bring her back to him. This was how Linus found him when he went to the hospital later that night. Linus had brought along a hamper and started putting out plates of food on Sunny’s tray table. Sven looked surprised.

Linus shrugged. “I read someplace that smell is the most evocative of all the senses. Sunny loves food and loves to cook. I thought the smell of lobster risotto and fresh baked bread might help bring her round. I had my chef prepare it. You could use a good meal. I also dropped off food at Sunny’s villas. My boat is bringing in supplies and clothing, and medicine for the hospital. I can’t stand just sitting around waiting for some word about Mimi.” This was purgatory for an alpha male.

Sven thought that the food was a marvellous idea — and he was starving. Linus offered to sit with Sunny for the next few hours so that Sven could grab some sleep.

He gratefully agreed and walked wearily down the street to Mimi’s condo, careful to keep his newly charged cellphone by his ear, in case there was any news.

He was up at first light, pausing only to grab a cup of coffee and call his mother before he returned to the hospital.

Judith was heartbroken to hear Sunny had not yet woken up. She was surprised to hear that Sunny was still pregnant, but now she understood why she had kept her distance. Since Sunny could not lie to her, she had to remain silent.
