Later on, I pulled up to the diner. I knew I told her that I would meet her at her place, but the more I thought about it, the less I wanted to give her ex the opportunity to catch her at the end of her shift. When she came out of the diner and saw me sitting in the parking lot, I saw the faintest hint of a smile.

I followed her to her place, keeping my eyes on the road and sitting out front while she packed some things up. When she was done, I tossed them in the back of the truck.

Harleigh followed me up the mountain, up to my place. Thankfully, I had enough time to drop off Aiden’s stuff at his cabin while Harleigh was working. I didn’t bug him about what was going on, but he seemed to notice, even as tired as he was, that something was up. Eventually, I’d let him know what was going on too. When we got to my place, Harleigh helped me bring things into the cabin and settled herself in for a few moments while I flipped through my menus for something to deliver for dinner.

“Thank you again,” she said. “I won’t be here long, I promise. Just until he stops.”

“You are going to be here as long as you need to,” I said, coming into the room with the phone to my ear, hold music playing on the speaker. “However long that is.”
