CHAPTER 13

“Icannot believe you let me stay in a haunted house without even telling me,” Avery huffed.

With the change in scenes, Avery wouldn’t be shooting for the rest of the day, so Shay had invited her to come up to the ritual room along with Simone and Poppy. With her best friend the only one injured in the lighting accident—assuming it had been an accident—Shay felt it only right to come clean and tell Avery what was going on.

“I didn’t want to make you nervous while you were shooting,” Shay said. “I thought we could handle it, and I’d just tell you afterward as a funny story.”

Avery twisted her mouth. “Okay, fine. I forgive you. But no more secret ghosts.”

“Deal,” Shay said, her mind reeling at the fact that just yesterday, that would have seemed a preposterous promise to have to make.

Poppy paced a circle around the ritual chamber, stopping to ask Simone, “And you still don’t feel anything? If the spirit is strong enough to make something explode, you should sense a presence.”

“Mediums aren’t built in a day.” There was a hint of defensiveness in Simone’s tone. “I’m new at this and haven’t had that much practice.”

“I’m not judging.” Poppy squeezed Simone’s shoulder. “I’m just surprised, is all.”

“Tell me about it,” Simone said wryly.

“What about this?” Shay gestured to the grimoire on the table. “We got interrupted before, but can’t I just ask it how to talk to a ghost?”

“My knowledge of the grimoire is limited,” Poppy said. “But it can’t hurt to try.”

“How do I talk to a ghost?” Shay asked.

They waited. Nothing.

Shay bent close, the way Avery had the night before, feeling foolish as she asked again, “How do I talk to a ghost?”

She tried the clasp. Still nothing.

“It should just flop open,” Poppy said. “I think.”

“You wanna try?” Shay stepped back, making a be-my-guest gesture.

Poppy shook her head. “I know that definitely won’t work. The Atwater grimoire only opens for an Atwater.”

“Maybe it needs another drop of your blood,” Avery offered. “So it knows you’re really an Atwater.” Light glinted on the tip of the dagger as she stepped forward.

Shay backed away. “I thought you said blood magic wasn’t to be messed with.”

Avery shrugged. “That was before a ghost did this.” She held up her bandaged hand. “Blood is already involved.” She took another step toward Shay, still brandishing the blade.

“Let’s try something else first,” Shay said quickly. “Everything else.”

“Okay…” Avery set down the knife. “But that was the pivotal moment in Dawn of the Witch 2. Just saying.”

“What about trying another seance? Or lighting the candles or something?” Shay asked. “Maybe we need to witch the place up.”

Simone cast a doubtful glance around the room. “Place looks pretty witchy to me.”

“It can’t hurt.” Poppy struck a match, the flame sizzling to life. She lit the candles. “Okay, what else? Any of these stones calling to you? Or maybe one of the potions?” She strode over and picked one off the shelf. She uncorked it and recoiled.
